Fashion In An Age Of Technology

By Adrien Communier

Fashion is constantly changing and as technology evolves, fashion follows the same path. For the past few years, technology has been everywhere near fashion. From Philipp Plein’s catwalk musician robots to Louis Vuitton’s digital muse, Lightning from the Final Fantasy series, and this year’s Met Gala theme “Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology”, technology is without a doubt prominent in contemporary fashion and the two are intricately linked.

But high fashion is not the only part of the industry rapidly evolving. Ready-to-wear power-house and denim king Levi’s, just announced an exclusive collaboration with Google ATAP to create an innovative denim. The Levi’s Commuter Trucker Jacket with Jacquard Technology woven in: the jacket allows cyclists to control their mobile device and to connect to different services directly from the jacket sleeve without having to interact with your phone. Levi’s explained that their primary goal is to adapt, and confront the new challenges of our digital and fast-paced world, and they totally did with this interactive jacket that serves as a co-pilot without even interacting with your phone.

In the same vein, London’s Victoria & Albert museum just revealed a brand new installation called “Elytra Filament Pavilion” fabricated by a robot for their first Engineering Season. The project explores how biological fibre system can be transferred to architecture and the pavilion is inspired by lightweight construction principles found in nature.
The installation will run from May 18 to November 6, 2016 at the V&A. For more information, click here.
