.Flowing; Bespoke Tailoring for Your Perfume
If you wouldn’t buy a suit off the rack why would you buy a perfume off the rack?
For those who are true perfume lovers with a pretty fluid bank account there is now the opportunity to create your own signature scent with one of the true masters of perfume! Alberto Morillas joins forces with Penhaligon’s only at the Harrods Salon De Parfum in London’s knightsbridge to offer customers a bespoke perfume opportunity.
This is the ultimate marriage of luxury and custom perfumery. This is an experience never before offered in the retail setting. It’s not just that the perfume is bespoke, it’s that you will make it with the help of Alberto Morillas – superstar perfumer and creator of some of the world’s finest fragrances.
Spanish born Morillas’ distinguished career began in 1970 when he left the School of Beaux Arts in Geneva and joined Firmenich. Since then, he has worked in both mainstream and niche perfume, being responsible for such sents as Calvin Klein CK One, Kenzo Flower, Bvlgari Omnia, Cartier Panthere de Cartier and Giorgio Armani Aqua di Giò. Morillas describes himself as mostly self-taught and favours a spontaneous approach, often beginning with a simple concept like a colour. Among countless other awards, he was awarded the prestigious Prix François Coty in 2003.
The process begins in Harrods stunning boutique where individual preferences are noted, followed by two or three further appointments (at a place of the customer’s choosing). Over the course of around 6 months Penhaligon’s guides the customer through the process of bespoke perfumery with Alberto Morillas. Towards the end of the process, the customer’s preferences are refined by a questionnaire conceived of by Morillas, then interpreted and prepared. Fragrance submissions are then submitted by the master perfumer in a series of in-person meetings.
Once the finished bespoke perfume is created, it is delivered in a hand-made marquetry box containing 2, 200ml handmade, custom designed and engraved crystal bottles by British manufacture Silver Tree Crystal. The formula is exclusively copyrighted to the customer and cannot be recreated without their permission (but of course can be refilled). Bespoke perfumes start at £35 000 and rise up dependant on extra travel costs. Refills of the fragrances are available for a price of £2 500 for 2, 200ml refill bottles.
Penhaligon’s is already known for its signature fragrance profiling, a complementary service that educates consumers guiding them on an olfactory journey of discovery. Fragrance profiling demystifies the various fragrance types while helping customers select a fragrance that best reflects their personality and lifestyle.
If you want a truly original one off present for someone you love then maybe this is it? Or if the budget doesn’t quite stretch that far Penhaligon’s offer a slightly revised version.
A new programme created again exclusively for the Harrods Salon de Parfums features a selection of pure perfume bases, which may be customised. Created by Fabrice Pellegrin each of the bases was envisioned as a tribute to the archetypal structures of the four main olfactory families – chypre, woody, amber and oriental. This offers a level of personalised bespoke services where clients on a one to one get to experiment within set boundaries.
Customers are introduced to the bases, each of which are beautiful stand-alone perfumes. Once a customer has selected their preferred base, they are offered the opportunity to personalise the scent with the addition of one of four essence signatures, Rose Cetefolia Absolute, Oud Wood Essence, Iris and Sandalwood. Blended and bottled in the boutique while the customer can go off and shop some more or maybe have a glass of something bubbly?
Each new fragrance is created to Pellegrin’s precise formulation with the percentage of base to essence carefully and individually calibrated according to the nuances of the notes and desired olfactory outcome. Ranging from £300-£425 each are offered in a signature 100ml bottle. The bottle may be further personalised with a choice of one of 10 coloured bows, a signature Penhaligon’s touch.
The Harrods store also have refillable, 200 ml bottles of Penhaligon’s popular Trade Routes collection. Stunning, hand-blown glass vessels containing the Trade Routes scents are displayed on the wall. When selected the fragrance is decanted into special 200 ml bottles (with glass stopper) and packaged with a deluxe travel atomizer.
Completing the curated selection in Penhaligon’s new boutique in the Harrods Salon de Parfums is the engaging Portraits Collection, the brand’s foray into olfactive fiction.
Nothing has been forgotten.
