Immense; My Hero Mascara

By Julie Jacobs

Over the years I have leaned towards choosing my mascara — for work and personal use — based on the size of the brush, I’ve grown to prefer smaller brushes. I find big brushes awkward to use on models as well as  myself, I nearly always smudge a little on my upper lid, maybe I’m just clumsy?
MAC once kindly gave me an In Extreme Dimension Lash for the pop star Kiesza, I was very impressed with the intense black; it really stood out against her fair skin more so than anything else I had used on her before, however the brush was so big I always handed it to Kiesza to apply.
With small brushes I can see where I’m going and can easily aim for the finest of hairs in the corners and get on top of the lashes, basically I feel in control.

Obviously the performance of the product itself has to be good but for photo shoots I know the mascara will crumble over a long period of time but I’m there to touch up so a little fall out does not bother, however if I’m shooting out side the more nourishing the product the better.

As for nourishing, I never understood why brands would emphasise the conditioning aspect of a mascara until I experimented once by applying a different mascaras each day for a week for a whole month. Until this test I honestly never realised how dry and crispy lashes were at the end of the day. If you are a mascara kind of girl ( I’m a lipstick girl) my tip while cleansing is ‘gently does it is’ and ‘take your time’. Let the remover dissolve away the product instead of impatiently rubbing it away. Remember the skin around your eye area is ten times thinner that anywhere else on your face. What’s the point of having great thick luscious looking lashes against a backdrop of prematurely crepey skin?

Benefit They’re Real!
I’ve grown to like silicone brushes. I like the way they separate the lashes and I don’t think they dump product on the hairs as bristle brushes can do. Benefits They’re Real! is a favourite in my kit. The domed spiked tip makes it easier to reach difficult corners.

MAC Upward Lash
Sometimes I layer different mascaras. I often use MAC’s Upward Lash to evenly separate the lashes then add Givenchy’s Phenomen’Eyes’ on the tips to add length. The brush for Upward Lash is so small I easily reach all the areas I want and its consistency is a little more wet than the usual mascara so I feel it coats the hairs evenly.

Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes’
I always tell anyone who’s willing to listen that ‘Givenchy’s Phenomen’Eyes’ was the first mascara that gave me lashes’. I (once again) was dubious about this new round spiky applicator, then I applied a layer and for the first time I could see my lashes as I blinked — without looking in the mirror. IT IS AMAZING! However I do find it awkward to use on other people so I keep one in my kit and apply as a second layer especially when I want to add extra length to the lash tips.

Sisley Mascara So Intense
The wand may look like the old fashioned early invention mascaras but I love the Sisley Mascara So Intense, it’s very easy to use on other people. I can reach every corner, top of the lashes, all the way to the roots; top and bottom without smudging. This is my ’I am in complete control’ mascara.
