Metallic Designs

By Jo Phillips

Although not actually made of metal, metallic clothing can feel like a suit of armour to the wearer. The material is often simple and refined in texture but yet opulent enough to be striking, making the person feel comfortable during the sophisticated evenings when it will be worn.

Central Saint Martins graduate Fei Feng grew up amongst the inspiration of Chinese design and literature and has since incorporated the romanticism of her heritage into her designs. Her label Fei Fei Cicada made its London Fashion Week debut this year and showcased a fusion of Chinese creativity and metallic materials, designing dresses for a Palace she envisioned as ‘belonging to no country, time or space’. The anachronisms of her collection seemed to be an ode to this generation’s current yearning for nostalgia whilst blending both history and art.
