Cy Twombly was the height of an artistic era dictated by abstract expressionism. His style was predominately clear, and his practice of gestural painting allowed him to stand out from his artistic peers of the time. Twombly deployed themes of dark romanticism, poetry, literature and mythologies, inspired by the streets of Rome, where he relocated for most of his career. He gravitated towards stories that made his mind think unconventionally, speaking into existence what he felt. He scribbled and scratched on the surface with meaning, each dot of paint or energetic scribble depicted his emotion.
