The paradox of ‘lonely by your side’ appears in Adam Hinton‘s ‘Shibuya’ exhibition. Named after the metro station in Tokyo, Japan, which is statistically one of the busiest in the world with approximately 2.5 million passengers passing through it every day, the photographic essay reflects the coming together of different people, sometimes squashed up against each other or against train windows. Despite their encounter in such close physical proximity, they are psychologically isolated from other people and sometimes also their surroundings. Hinton’s exhibition examines people out in the social world yet confined deep within their own world.
