We have had a rainy June here in the UK with a wonderfully hot July, and August looks to be as up and down as a pair of tarts knickers! But it’s close and when the weather is close we get sticky, we find it harder to breathe whether this be through our nose or even via our skin.

Well, we know the skin can’t breathe, but it can take substances from the outside and bring them in, including a little oxygen. The skin and its appendages, such as hair and nails, make up the integumentary system.

The word integumentary comes from Latin, meaning “to cover,” and that is the skin’s main purpose — to keep the world out and our internal organs protected. By its very nature, skin does not help us breathe. The skin is the largest organ, making up about 12 to 15 percent of our body weight. In addition to protection from outside toxins, the skin offers temperature regulation and sensory reception.

So for example, when the body overheats, it starts sweating, thereby promoting heat loss through evaporation as a way to regulate body temperature.

In humans, sweating is primarily a means of thermoregulation, which is achieved by the water-rich secretion of the eccrine glands. Maximum sweat rates of an adult can be up to 2–4 liters per hour or 10–14 liters per day, but is less in children prior to puberty.

Evaporation of sweat from the skin surface has a cooling effect. Hence, in hot weather, or when the individual’s muscles heat up due to exertion, more sweat is produced.

But sweat also contributes to body odor when it is metabolized by bacteria on the skin, hence there’s ultimately a need to wash regularly. There are loads of beauty products that claim they “let the skin breathe”. What they really mean is that the cosmetics and creams are non-comedogenic, meaning they don’t block pores. This prevents acne from building up, and instead of suffocating the skin, it keeps pores open to allow for temperature control.
