Skin: One to watch for 2015

By Jo Phillips

Goodbye 2014 and the disappointing glut of rehashed, samey riffs “borrowed” from genuine aural classics and Hello 2015 with your unveiling of fresh new talent.  We’re somewhat excited by the arrival of Barli; a soulful newcomer with gorgeous vocals, to the music scene bringing a touch of hypnotic lo-fi sounds to your stereos.

Cent---BarliCiting the velvety Gil Scott-Heron and Nina Simone as major influences, Barli has managed to capture a fresh, minimalist feel with the launch of Pebbles – her debut EP – not unlike the calm and collected sound of french outfit Air.  Key tracks for us include Pebbles, Vex and Rum Woman thanks to their blend of ambient, trip-hop yet silky and harmonious melodies and addictive hooks.

We don’t think it’s too soon to say that Barli looks to be one to watch this year.
