.Work; Christopher Kane Pre-Fall 2018

Written by Najla Hamadeh

Christopher Kane’s pre-fall 2018 collection was a photo album of gothic romance merged with underground tunnel flash. Kane said of the looks: “It’s all the things I love: diamonds, neon, feathers. I OD’d on diamonds — but I couldn’t help it”. Each piece read like evening-wear, put together in the sort of outfit you would choose for dinner at an upscale restaurant in the city. A palette of black, white, and silver flashed in ‘80s-esque rockstar glamour, treating traditional silhouettes with a dramatic twist: tuxedo jacket with crystal tassels; cinched-in black midi-dress with lace, draped, asymmetric sleeves; high-shine leather maxi dress with ostrich-inspired feather trimming; front-slit broderie anglaise skirt in white with a galactic-sequinned top; oversized glitter clutches; black, white, and fluorescent-pink lace dress with pointed-toe, kitten-heeled boots with diamante fringing; graphic sweaters with frill turtlenecks and white cowboy boots. All were shot in subdued neon lighting in Stoke-on-Trent’s aesthetically-inspiring Potteries Museum & Art Gallery; like pictures taken at an event, they looked unstaged, almost candid, a perfect juxtaposition of high-end and lo-fi, roughed-up gloss.
