Even if you cannot remember the name of a perfume, you are sure to remember its scent, and that is its inherent power: it creates an aura that encapsulates your state of mind and emits self-confidence. Look no further: Cartier and Montblanc have each recently released a men’s perfume and the two embody the finest notes of the everyday man.




On the 20th anniversary of Cartier’s Declaration eau de toilette, the brand’s perfumer, Mathilde Laurent, proposed a ‘descendant’ to pay tribute. Originally created in 1998 by perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, it became the signature scent for lovers. This 2018 incarnation echoes the sentiment of its predecessor but, keeping up with the changing times, it has a fresh take: a sleek, stylishly modern bottle is filled with a fragrance that is both elegant and intensely bold with cool cardamom (which has never before been used in Cartier perfumery) as well as cedar, fig, and waxed wood. It “both builds on and reinforces its heritage” and acts as a bridge for the old and the new, the original and the protege.



Montblanc Legend Night 100ml Bottle - £67.00


Montblanc has put forth its third iteration of Legend, which was first created in 2011 by Peter Lindbergh. Another was released in 2015 – Legend Spirit – and, now, Legend Night. Birthed by Antoine Maisondieu and Olivier Pescheux, its intention is to embody the characteristics of the Montblanc man: ultra-masculine yet free from aggression, mysterious, and reassuring. It seeks to reveal the “charisma of the wearer”, an amplifier of the surrounding aura and the glow within. It has top notes of clary sage, peppermint, cardamom, and bergamot and middle notes of cedarwood, lavender, and violet.

If you are still wondering what to get your partner for Valentine’s Day, perfume is always an excellent choice. Looks and personality aside, there’s nothing as seductive as a man who can brush past you with the sweet, subtle smell of his cologne lingering in the air.
