The best travel gear for outdoor explorers
By Jo Phillips
Getting out and about and exploring the world around you has so many benefits. Both your mental and physical health will be improved by even the simplest of walks.
If you are an explorer, you’ll want to be heading out on different walks with varying terrain, different sights and beautiful scenery along the way. Part of getting the most out of your adventures is having appropriate gear. Whether it is footwear, navigation tools or cooking equipment, having reliable and suitable tools will keep you safe.
Footwear
There is nothing more painful than developing a blister midway through a hike. Having the right footwear can help to prevent this.
When shopping for new walking boots terrain, weather and comfort are equally as important. If you are planning on walking on flat ground and paths then look for boots that have a bit of flexibility. By contrast, uneven terrain needs a firmer sole and good ankle support.
You may have heard that new boots need to be broken in. This isn’t always true as many boots will be comfortable from the off but taking them for a test walk is never a bad idea.
Apparel
If you are a keen hiker in the UK, you will know that the weather can change at the drop of a hat. When preparing for a walk check the weather forecast. Although it isn’t always accurate, it will at least be a good guide.
Make sure you pack layers to pre-empt the temperature dropping or the rain descending. Many modern coats and trousers will be showerproof, meaning you should be well-protected. For those planning on a chilly winter walk, think about thermal layers such as fleeces, undershirts and thermal leggings.
Navigation tools
Navigation tools are essential gear for walking, even if you are planning to stick to signposted paths. There could be flooding or a fallen tree which means you need to deviate from the plan. Knowing how to navigate yourself around any diversions will keep you safe and on track.
Ensure you have a working compass, an accurate map and a charged GPS device. Some walkers will prefer using a traditional compass and map to get around whereas a digital device may be the technological innovation of their dreams for others. Whichever method you prefer, you need to be confident in your abilities to use them.
Cooking equipment
Food is crucial for keeping your energy levels up as you traverse through the wilderness. Many hikers will opt for prepackaged ration packs and snacks, but some do prefer a bit more of a home-cooked meal.
Whichever option you prefer, your equipment needs to be able to feed you well. Lightweight stoves and cookware will keep you fed as well as minimise the weight you are carrying in your pack. Try to pick versatile items as well. A larger pan, for example, can also double as a kettle and washing-up pot, making it worth the bulk and weight.
