Moments of peace kissed with the warmth of a good book in a restful lush garden. In the world of perfumery, Vanilla is that hot beach holiday, all sticky sand, and suntan lotion alongside teenage first kisses. But the elegant holiday in perfumery is the lush green fresh airy and wild forests and it just so happens it is the latest from Aesop. It’s restful chic, and refreshing and feels more akin to mindful moments than sickly ice cream An elegant scent with the notes of a truly healing uplifting holiday.
The latest scent from Australian superbrand Aesop is called Virēre. This unusual word actually has its roots in the English term Verdent and almost means ‘to be green’ or to ‘be full of life’ so it perfectly sums up this new elixir.
The story behind this perfume is from the perfumer the brilliant Barnabé Fillion who talked about his childhood holidays and memories of the Mediterranean when creating this aroma. From cycling beside fragrant orchards to steeping fresh fig in a morning cup of green tea; moments of treasured simplicity that replenish and restore.
So it opens with a refreshing rush of double citrus delights, Bergamot (a fragrant citrus fruit, with a yellow or green colour) and Petitgrain bringing a sunny vitality but the extra joy in the opening comes from the most wonderful biblical green ingredient, Galbanum; this resin has a very intense green scent. An ancient ingredient, mentioned in the Old Testament in the original recipe for instance.
This fragrance moves forward into a heart that is both a pink Pepper warmth and a cool note with Green Tea. A light spice with cool herbaceous yin-yang together.
So to bring the scent home its base could easily be called a ‘grounding finish’ with the wood scent of soft spiced Cedar and earthy dry straw notes of Hay and finally a majestic flourish with complex, smoky, herbaceous scent of Mate that also has facets with of Tobacco, fruity, leathery, phenolic undertones whilst echoing back the earlier Hay, and green Tea notes.
Barnabé Fillion is no ordinary perfumer. Not one for short quick fixes and easy throw-away scents. This elegant and invigorating scent ebbs and flows via the soft sunshine green herbaceous borders and lingering woody forests But as ever with anything Barnabé does for Aesop it is about the nuances slightly hidden within. There is no sense of shouting out here
It is the exploration, the journey, and the magic noted along the way. Yes, you get the delicious Galbanum in her green glory you may well be familiar with the citrus bites of Petitgrain and Bergamot. But at its centre, that little bit of heat via pink Pepper brings warmth to the cool shade of the leaves, twigs and fruit.
Its base again surprises with the delightful intricate faceted Mate. This natural ingredient comes from the leaves of the Maté tree, a type wholly native to South and Central America. Interestingly, as this perfume is inspired by the Mediterranean yet its notes reach far further. But then so does the creativity at the Aesop brand and this new scent is yet another brilliantly remarkable and beautiful perfume.
