Licious red lips, glowing, flushed pink cheeks or even smokey eyes and a natural lip tone. We do love to put colour on our faces to raise our energy for the day ahead or to highlight, for a night out. But we don’t really know what goes into these delicious products, do we? As we treat our faces to some love how is it affecting our skin or even our planet? Find out more about this in Flowers on Your Skin; Kinder Powerful Beauty
Maybe it is a little scary when you realise that 95% of cosmetic colouring is derived from petroleum derivatives. Natural make-up is few and far between.
The beauty industry has a variety of effects on the environment. Some behaviours have the potential to produce dangerous microplastics and have extremely detrimental effects on wildlife, the oceans, and natural resources. Eco-friendly make-up decisions can help minimise the potential threats to all the elements of the environment.
How about then, every time you use some make-up there you end up with flowers on your skin? Ones with exceptional biological properties, you regenerate the economy and the planet? In recent times, we as consumers have grown much more keen and knowledgable about ethically sourced, cruelty-free, eco-friendly and sustainable products, and more importantly, our daily skincare routine, especially if it includes make-up. So meet the new French make-up brand LE ROUGE FRANÇAIS. The new brand offers the first alternative to chemical, non‑renewable pigments: plant‑based colour.
Plant-based pigments not only boast incredible colour-giving qualities, but they also contain a host of active ingredients that are great for your skin. Every aspect of the house’s makeup products, including the colour, embodies natural beauty and provides nourishing, hydrating, rejuvenating skincare.
For each order, LE ROUGE FRANÇAIS plant one young mangrove; a plant which has the most efficient carbon sequestration capacity on the planet. What could it take for more ethical makeup?
LE ROUGE FRANÇAIS sublimates women thanks to pigments derived from dye plants with incredible biological properties. These plant pigments gently adapt to each skin tone for a personalised result.
Founded in 2020 by Elodie Carpentier and Salem Ghezaili, LE ROUGE FRANÇAIS was born from the desire to exceed the organic limits while embracing the standards of luxury desirability.
Born in Vendôme, Paris, LE ROUGE FRANÇAIS is a pioneer in the high-end makeup industry to be certified as Vegan and Organic. In addition to representing French elegance, their positioning is firmly oriented towards the respect of women’s health and the environment.
Their exclusive procedures and mixtures are devoid of titanium dioxide and mica, two contentious or allergic substances. On top of that castor oil is used to make the reusable, recyclable lipstick case, which is light, strong, and stylish while avoiding plastic as much as possible.
“Pregnant, I wanted to keep wearing my red lipstick, which gives me strength and seduction every day. I then started being interested in formulations and the conclusion was quickly clear… As a biotechnology engineer, I decided to start designing my own lipsticks with the purest ingredients available. Using plant-based pigments was an obvious choice, both for their coloring qualities and their incredible biological properties. With Salem, my husband, we decided to create LE ROUGE FRANCAIS with, at the heart of each formula, strength, poetry and the incredible benefits of dye plants.”
–Élodie CARPENTIER (Founder of LE ROUGE FRANÇAIS)
Rouge Tinctorial Collection
A range of lipsticks that are so natural that they burst with colour thanks to the use of Madder, Damascus Rose, or Chestnut bark, dressed in an eco-refillable casing with castor oil derived from plants. The lipstick formulas are made from biosourced dye plants such as: Sappan, Hibiscus, Urucum, Madder, Castanea, Cosmos, Lotus Flower, Indigo, Sorgho, Damask Rose, Turmeric, Reseda, Galle or Beetroot.
A Virtual Formula includes; Shea Butter: for repairing and moisturising and castor, Jojoba, apricot, and Sunflower oils as antioxidants and moisturisers. Rice, Candelilla, and Carnauba and vegetable waxes for softening and protecting agents.
The lipsticks are free of artificial preservatives, silicones, squalene, colourants, artificial pigments, mica, titanium dioxide, artificial perfume, BHT, and BHA.
The Nordgron Lip Balm
The exclusive blend of the product is derived from Icelandic customs meant to ward off the harsh Fjords winter. It is enhanced with probiotics, which help to rebuild the tissue flora of your lips and strengthen your defences against outside threats.
The bio-fermentation process produces high-performance hyaluronic acid with a film-forming ability that extends hydration and has a soothing effect. Hemp oil’s calming qualities help to lessen the effects of discomfort.
Indigo Celeste Collection
Indigo, sometimes known as the “seventh colour of the rainbow,” has an unusual and striking colour scheme. Mayan paintings and statues in Central America display the red of indirubin, while blue fabrics dyed with indigotine emerge from the city of Mohenjo-Daro in the heart of the Indus Valley. Women in Africa use it to create a rich black colour for body and hair dye. Additionally, indigo possesses amazing biological qualities.
Roman hydrolate Chamomile: calming Castor and Jojoba oils: nourishing Sheathing vegetable wax made from Carnauba.
Canopée Légendaire
For the eye collection, which consists of the mascara and the eyeliner, vegetable charcoal, which is made from coconut shells, adds a vibrant colour in very small amounts. Its rich black colour lends vitality to figures and flat areas of blurred density, as seen in the work of Auguste Allongé in the 19th century and prehistoric cave art. When used as a culinary colour, it adds uniqueness and contrast to dishes.
Rouge to Go Collection
Lightness and freshness in shades ranging from coral red to flowery pink cheeks to be used with the fingertips in a mobile format.
The powerful colouring ability and amazing medicinal qualities of madder roots, or Rubia Tinctorum, have been utilised for millennia in the Mediterranean Basin.
Using these pigments with endless shades of red, Queens and Empresses would apply a true ancient beauty regimen to make their complexions and lips appear darker.
Galatée Précieuse Collection
The line of nail polishes called Galatée Précieuse draws inspiration from marine life. A line of intensely pigmented nail polishes enhanced with red seaweed for a naturally glossy and long-lasting finish. An all-natural, vegan, and 81% bio-sourced solution that deeply repairs and strengthens your nails.
The plastids of the red algae Lithothamnion calcareum have a potent pigment. The sea people acquired the skill of mastering its potent colouring power during the Bronze Age. Its use as decoration is confirmed by the finding of amphorae and earthenware pots within the well-known Uluburum wreck in Turkey. Because seaweed is high in iodine and fibre, the centenarians on the island of Okinawa use it as a medicinal meal.
Lampyris Divine
This indispensable multipurpose balm strikes the ideal balance between hygienic practices and the cult of aesthetics, drawing inspiration from the beauty rituals of the Homeric heroes who slathered scented ointments all over their bodies and faces.
In a nutshell, it can be concluded that not any of the products contain any synthetic pigments, titanium dioxide, mica, synthetic perfume, BHT and BHA, artificial preservatives, silicones, squalene, colourants, and any ingredients of animal origin.
At the end of the day, to save our Mother Earth it is imperative to raise awareness of elements wreaking havoc on the environment. But it is, one step at a time, but here it can be by a floral yet natural flash of colour.
