Icon; Kiss me, Quickly!
By Julie Jacobs
I have to admit I wasn’t a fan of liquid lipsticks but they seem to be everywhere now so I thought I’d give them a go, I’ve been wearing a different one everyday ALL DAY for the past four weeks and my opinion has softened. I initially become aware of their popularity due to Kylie Jenner so I presumed they were for the ‘young’ but many more premium brands have developed a line of liquid lipsticks now.
All liquid lipsticks have certain characteristics:
1. Hardly any bleeding. Even if the inner lip wore away my lip line virtually stayed all day.
2 After a few seconds they dry matt so even if it has a creamy shiny texture don’t be fooled, it will dry matt.
3. There are varying levels of matt from a satin/matt to ‘dry looking’ to chalky – dry and chalky wasn’t a good look.
4. Generally they’re highly pigmented and the red and darker colours in particular can stain.
5. Adventurous colours from the deepest darks to brightest pinks and reds to the coolest nudes. This product in particular has brought out the dare devil in a few brands I would never have expected.
A few of my favourites
Armani Lip Magnet Second-Skin Intense Matte Color – 509 Romanza
MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour – Burnt Spice
Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick – Ayesha
Buxom VáVá Plump Shiny Liquid Lipstick – Honey Do
NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment – Get It On
Sleek Matte Me Ultra Smooth Matte Lip Cream – STFU
Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Lips matte Contour Liquid Lipstick – Dolly Bird
I expected these lipsticks to all be a liquid but they vary in consistency from liquid to single to double to whipped cream – which was unexpected – the creamier lipstick the more texture it added to my lips. Some liquid lipsticks layer well without any caking and some do not! If I wanted to touch up it was a case of wiping it all off and starting again. I learnt this the hard way, I tried to layer a few and my lips looked so dry like I hadn’t drunk fluids for a week, not a pretty site. I discovered the more liquid the consistency the better it layered. A few friends had said they found matte lipsticks to be drying so to prevent that I applied Balmkind Alpine Rose & Lysine Lip Balm about five minutes before hand.
StarWay Cosmetics Disco Playful Musician Liquid Lipstick- PM219
Diego Dalla Palma Geisha matt Liquid Lipstick – 04 Kyoto Nights
Bobbi Brown Luxe Liquid Lip Velvet Matte – Follow Your Rose 3
Beauty Blvd Mattitude Lip Liquid – Secret Passage
ArtDeco Full Mat Lip Color Long Lasting – 18 raspberry love
Laura Geller Fifty Kisses Lip Locking Liquid Color – Beige Bite
Balmkind Alpine Rose & Lysine Lip Balm **’Odd one out’ nourished my lips nicely before any matt lipstick.
However like all make-up you can break the rules and manipulate them to make it work for you. Due to characteristic number one (see above) I find them great as a base to a conventional lipstick of the same or similar colour. I know it defeats the objective of the matt affect but at least I know my lip line and colour will last longer than normal; perfect for this party season.
