Inbox Art- Miranda July
By Jo Phillips
In the words of Miranda July, author, filmmaker, and performance artist, “privacy, the art of it, is evolving”. This is the concept behind her latest project, We Think Alone, an email compendium featuring unedited, candid emails forwarded from an unusual group of contributors including actress and director Lena Dunham, basketball, athlete Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy.
For those who sign up to receive the free email installations, they arrive directly in participants’ inboxes once a week from July 1st, 2013. The first week’s issue, An Email About Money, explores the complexities of money in a subtle manner as the piece is conveyed through the formal and yet strangely intimate format of an email exposed to the cyberworld.
As Miranda July writes on We Think Alone’s Website, “How they (the contributors) comport themselves in email is so intimate, almost obscene — a glimpse of them from their own point of view. WE THINK ALONE has given me the excuse to read my friends’ emails and the emails of some people I wish I was friends with and for better or worse it’s changed the way I see all of them.” Commissioned by Magasin 3, We Think Alone will continue to run until November 11th, 2013.
