Joyous Colours of The Italian Sun on Your Face
By Jo Phillips
The tradition of the Grand Tour dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries and saw wealthy young men and later women take this cultural travelling holiday to absorb ancient French Literature, Italian Art and Greek Philosophy. Find out more about how this rite of passage brought sunshine into these young lives in Joyous Colours of The Italian Sun on Your Face.

It became increasingly popular among women in the late 18th century and early 19th century, for British upper-class young women travelling Europe was part of formal education and a form of entrance into elite society.
It’s hard for us in the modern day, to understand just how dramatic this would have been. At this point, these young travellers would have led quite sheltered lives and the opportunity brought freedom and some bad behaviour. Image, also for the first time, seeing the bright blue waters and golden sun of a seaside or canals, high summer days bringing a glow to faces and their souls. Italy was very much favoured by women.
These young Brtis came from a country where rain is more common than blazing golden sunshine, so not only would they have come back from their travels more educated, but probably with a little more colour and shimmer in their now slightly more worldly cheeks.
Think of the sun sand and sea of, say, an Italian coast with rippling turquoise seas shimmering from the bright glowing sun, where lemons and oranges grew freely. Paint the picture and it’s easy to imagine the colours and sparkles of the passionate country.
