Meet The Humble Mimosa, with Her Magic Winter Sunshine

By Jo Phillips

In the UK the last bank Holiday in August tends to be the moment we realise summer is over, kids go back to school, the office is suddenly bustling and the roads are busy. Trees start to turn to russet tones and flowers lose their pretty petals. Turn towards Christmas for some joy? No, it’s still too far away. But there are some winter florals, flowers that appear much later in the season and that can hold their beauty and scent through the colder months. Meet the humble Mimosa; let her light shine via her scented shards.

Mimosa is like a burst of light in the middle of dark winter days. It is, along with the hyacinth, one of the rare flowers that grow in the middle of winter. Being as it is a hardy tree it can survive in low temperatures but does love the sunshine to fully bloom. Flowering starts in January and carries through to March, its soft golden shimmery buds reflect the golden sun she so loves.

In Asian cultures is known as the ‘Collective Happiness Bark’ because it provides a significant spiritual boost and in the ancient Mayan culture mimosa flowers were used to treat burns and injuries. Today, it is used in homoeopathic medicine, for ailments such as coughs, colds, and inflammation.

Since 1946, mimosa has been the emblem of Women’s Day (March 8) because it hides great strength and energy under its apparent fragility.

As for her scent? She has a powdery, honey, floral note and is also slightly almondy, as well as a hint of straw-like grass, it has a rather pronounced green facet as well because the leaves are distilled at the same time as the yellow balls, this is what gives light accents of cucumber or even melon to the absolute.

This pretty yet powerful shrub has been caught and held into one of three new editions to the Diptyque differ range.

The diffusers were originally brought out in Christmas 2021 adding to the home fragrance collection. The Oval facets glass container shaped to emulate the oval of the Maison, lets light shine through; the golden liquid fills the shape whilst fine rattan stems diffuse the space with majestic scents.
