If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Should I bother with a foundation with SPF?” “What SPF level should I use?” you’re not alone. In this day and age, we are encouraged to include so many layers in our morning (and evening) skin regime that it takes an additional hour to get ready. But there are only a handful of care products that really are incredibly important and SPF is one. But what exactly is it, and when is it included in a foundation? Yes, it’s still cold outside but don’t think because we are not all out in shorts and vests that we don’t need protection; we do. Sunscreen products can have a wide variety of SPF values, ranging from SPF 6 to 50+ and with that, different levels of protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

However, what are SPFs actually and what do they do when it comes to UV rays?  UVB, AVB, and even UVC are different types of protection from the sun’s powerful and potentially damaging light.

UVB, UVA and UVC rays are all part of the ultraviolet light that travels towards us from the sun. Have you heard of UVC rays? If not that’s probably because these rays are absorbed by the ozone layer and are just one of many reasons our Ozone layer is so important. On the other hand, UVB and UVB do reach the earth’s surface hence the reason for using protection.

So let’s be clear. UVBs give us a tan, but too much exposure, as we are aware, can lead to sunburn and consequently, skin cancer. UVB rays affect the epidermis, the top layer of our skin. 

UVA rays have the longest reach and travel through the atmosphere. These rays can reach the middle layers of the skin, the Dermis.  UVA can lead to the creation of harmful free radicals in the skin.

Free radicals are atoms or molecules with an odd number of electrons, making them unstable and reactive, and they are linked to ageing and a host of diseases. Exposure to them can cause things like cancer by damaging the proteins that repair your DNA. Also, it’s good to understand that UVA rays do not cause tanning and consequently, it is hard to know whether we have been exposed to a risky amount.

An added note, The PA+ denotes that it offers high protection against UVA rays, the more the pluses the higher the protection grade of UVA.

In high summer, of course, it is important to match our suncare with our skin colour and tone. The lighter the skin then the higher the number of SPF. But what about winter? Don’t be fooled into thinking it is not necessary. Just as important is to protect during the months when we don’t really notice the sun and heat on our skin it’s still there sending out its rays and free radicals. It’s important to remember SPF is only fully effective for two hours after application, it is recommended to re-apply your sunscreen every two hours regardless of the sun protection factor.

A good option is, of course, a great foundation with built-in SFP. In high summer using one with a broad spectrum is good.

It’s not a good idea to mix your own. DIY mixing may also lead to uneven application, which could result in areas of your skin receiving less sun protection than others, compromising your overall defence against UV radiation. However, a suitable one to layer underneath your foundation if you want to up your protection is a great idea and some foundations don’t contain SPF for this very reason.
