Planning the Ultimate Halloween Party
By Jo Phillips
To be truly memorable, a Halloween party has to bring together a variety of elements. You’ll need to capture the spirit of the occasion – which, in most cases, means using every element of the party, from the music to the food, as a vehicle for spookiness.
Choose a Spooky Theme
Of course, one thing that’s sure to distinguish your Halloween party is the right theme. By getting specific, you can stand apart. You might go for a haunted house theme or something inspired by your favourite film or television series. Once you have a clear theme in mind, it will inform your décor, costumes, and activities, and give you a sense of clarity that will make planning everything that little bit easier.
Set the Scene with Spine-Chilling Decorations
Only with the right décor in place will your guests be able to immerse themselves in your chosen theme. This means picking out the right props and hanging them in a few strategic places. This is your chance to stretch your creative muscles. If you have particular skills with arts and crafts, then you can showcase them. If your Halloween party is taking place at night, then lighting will play a critical role. Try to install your Halloween lights so that they’re shining up at your decorations, and casting spooky shadows.
Craft a Ghoulish Menu
If you’re going to be serving food and drink, whether as part of a sit-down meal or a buffet, you’ll want to make sure that everything matches your theme. If you know what you’re doing, you can even incorporate spectacular effects. Dry ice provides a classic ‘witch’s brew’ effect – but you’ll need to know how to handle it safely and effectively.
Note that your theme shouldn’t get in the way of everything looking and tasting great. Make sure also that you’re catering to everyone’s allergies and dietary preferences. After all, there’s no point in putting on a spread of spooky canapes that look great and taste terrible.
Plan Spooky Games and Entertainment
Finally, you should think about the games and entertainment you’re going to be putting on. This should, like everything else, be informed by the theme. You might hold a contest for the best costume – which has the added benefit of persuading everyone to put the effort in.
In some cases, you might want to spend a little time creating the effect you’re looking for. Hiring a magician, a band, or a DJ might be viable, particularly if this is a larger party. If you have kids attending, then traditional activities like bobbing for apples might be appropriate. Just make sure that the water is deep enough that your guests can’t cheat.
