Singing and Artists; Football is Iconic or even EYECONIC
By Jo Phillips
Artist and filmmaker Charlotte Colbert has collaborated with her friend singer Kate Nash on “EYECONIC” a song, playing kit and range of merchandise in support of community-owned club Lewes FC. With its radical gender parity message – it was the first club
to pay male and female players the same – the club celebrates an inclusive environment within and around the pitch.

The song’s name “EYECONIC” draws inspiration from Colbert’s eye symbol which she uses throughout her art practice – including monumental sculptures, installations and films.
“The eye links dreams and reality and for me represents the power of positive visualisation in creating a future we want to be part of. Lewes FC with its strong gender parity stance and
being 100% community owned enacts the change they want to see and that’s so inspiring “.
“I always loved football and I love charlotte’s work so it was really inspiring for me to write a football anthem that could be sung in locker rooms and on the pitch.”

“EYECONIC” is a galvanising football chant, celebrating
the “rooks” – the nickname for Lewes FC’s female players. Charlotte Colbert designed the playing kit and a range of merchandise available online as well as on the pitch to support Lewes FC’s “See Us as We Are”, campaign.
Nash, bringing Lewes FC’s narrative to life with her unique sonic storytelling. “See us as we are”, a line that also features in the song’s verse and through line, is a challenge to the perceptions of female players and asks people to stop seeing them as smaller counterparts to men.
The release of “EYECONIC” has been creatively driven by Colbert, whose successful course through the art world and film industry fully accelerated in 2022, when she released her first feature film.
Her feminist parable She Will, which she directed – staring Malcolm McDowell, Rupert Everett, Alice Krige and Kota Eberhart – received great critical praise.
“I’m a massive fan of Charlotte’s artwork, we’ve
been friends for quite a few years. She has such a powerful feminist vision. Charlotte told me about everything she was doing for Lewes FC and what they were doing for female players, that it was community-owned and paid their players equally. She asked me
to write a song and I jumped at the chance,” she enthuses, adding, “I love Charlotte – and I love football!”

As Nash’s “Foundations”, was sung on the way to matches
by the Lionesses during the World Cup 2023, Colbert felt that the collaboration and friendship between them was a great fit.
“Women’s football is growing fast”, said the club, ‘It’s inspiring
a new generation of young (and older) women – the potential for the sport is huge. If the women’s game can develop according to its own values and qualities, it will become something unique and powerful.”
