Sterling: The Best of Contemporary Art in The Secret Postcard Auction
By Rebecca Irvin
Original artworks are so often only affordable for the select few – art connoisseurs and collectors, galleries and the wealthy elite. Fine art in one’s own home is usually an unattainable luxury.
However, Art on a Postcard are endeavouring to make art accessible with their Secret Postcard Auction 2018. Contemporary artists work in collaboration with Art on a Postcard to reproduce their works in miniature within the parameters of a postcard – 10cm x 15cm. The initiative, conceived in 2014, was intended initially as a one-off auction to raise money for The Hepatitis C Trust as part of the charity’s move to eliminate the disease by 2025. Art on a Postcard’s success has led, however, to the project’s continuance and development, with multiple auctions and even a sister-initiative in the form of Photography on a Postcard, Photo London’s official affiliate charity.
In its past years, the project has engaged artists like Damien Hirst, Grayson Perry CBA RA, Harland Miller and Cicely Brown, with involvement too from photographers Martin Parr, Wolfgang Tillmans and Es Devlin.
This year, Art on a Postcard has curated a selection of 170 mini-artworks with some of the most significant and exciting artists currently creating. The little auction gallery encompasses art and artists from both the fine art and urban art spheres, and is home to names such as Marina Abramović, Humphrey Ocean RA, Golucho, Volker Hueller, Rob and Nick Carter, Martin Yeoman, Minas Halaj, Vanessa Jackson RA, Vhils, Alan Fears, Rebecca Salter RA, Nichol Fahriand Maria Kreyn, all of whom have donated their work in support of the charity.
The Secret Auction takes place at collaborative community art space We Work in Devonshire Square, London. An exhibition of the artworks will be held between Tuesday November 13thand Friday November 23rd, with the auction happening on Friday November 16th. With its largest annual Secret Auction yet, Art on a Postcard hopes this year to raise a greater sum than ever for The Hepatitis C Trust, as well as curating a unique and memorable experience for all lovers of art.
