The magic of jewellery: Solange’s revolution
By Yaxin Li
We love the rock and rollers, those people who don’t take life straight on and creatively twist our emotions with a sideways take on the world. In the world of the arts, these are the people that bring about change about newness and they are a vital lifeblood in this arena. There are few designers in the field of jewellery design who subvert traditional notions of aesthetics with their unique creativity and iconic style than Solange Azagury-Partridge. More than just jewellery, her creations are a fusion of art, symbolism and emotion, each piece full of visual impact and cultural meaning. Now, the esteemed jewellery designer has launched her first book, documenting a creative journey that has spanned more than three decades. The book not only showcases her unique understanding of colours and materials but also becomes a window into her unique creative world. Read more in The Magic of Jewellery: Solange’s Revolution.
Who would have thought that this designer would be self-taught, Solange Azagury-Partridge’s design story begins with her family. Growing up in a Moroccan-Jewish cultural mix, this multiculturalism provided her with an eclectic artistic vision.
The journey began in 1987 when she designed her own wedding ring, a starting point that gave her a different perspective from that of traditional jewellery designers.
Solange Azagury-Partridge
With no professional training in jewellery, Solange has developed an independent design approach based on her intuition of colours and materials and her unconventional imagination. Her work is bold and avant-garde, with a unique expression of individuality in both colour and material combinations.
Her collections such as Platonic are not only visual breakthroughs but also represent her bold experimentation and adventurous spirit in artistic expression. This independent and confident creative journey has made Solange a ‘rebel pioneer’ in the jewellery world, and her work has not only sparked a trend in the market but also made a rebellious statement to the jewellery industry.
Stoned Necklace
Unlike traditional jewellery design, Solange’s work is known for its vibrant, intense colours and bold themes, giving jewellery a new visual language. Her designs never stick to the traditional colour palette of jewellery, but rather use strong colour contrasts to create a dramatic effect.
Take the Scribbles collection as an example where here she literally interprets drawn markings into jewels. She expresses an emotional impact through bright colours, complex material combinations and abstract graphics.
In her work, colour is not only a visual delight, but also a symbol of emotion – red represents passion, blue symbolises depth, and green conveys hope – Solange’s mastery of colour makes her creations feel like emotional paintings, as if the jewellery can tell the wearer’s as if the jewellery could tell their inner story.
Viridian Ring
In addition to her bold designs, Solange’s jewellery is full of symbols and metaphors that serve not only as adornment but also as ‘amulets’ for the wearer. She boldly incorporates a variety of cultural symbols and historical elements into her designs, giving each piece a deeper meaning.
Her classic Hotlips ring, for example, is a symbol of a modern woman’s confidence and independence; Solange’s designs are never confined to traditional jewellery forms, but rather carry the mystique of ancient symbols that seem to protect the wearer and empower them with inner strength.
This combination of culture and symbolism makes her jewellery a statement of spiritual strength, allowing the wearer to exude a unique aura and confidence in a crowd.

This unique designer even makes the concept of jewellery extend and elevate through her naming of it. Her collections such as Supernature, Metamorphosis, Stoned, etc. are uniquely named to give emotion and life to the jewellery, Solange uses words to infuse the jewellery with an implied linguistic magic.
Wearing her creations is not just about adorning yourself, but also about showing your inner emotions and personality to the outside world through the names and designs.
This deep understanding of language and emotion allows Solange’s work to not only visually impress, but also convey a wealth of meaning in the subtleties of naming. Through her careful choice of language, jewellery becomes a ‘hidden language’, allowing the wearer to express themselves in silence and find their own emotional connection.
