The M word; yeah, that affects you even if you are not a ‘woman of a certain age’. One of the least talked about subjects yet it affects so many people.
Menopause. Just saying the word can evoke a sense of apprehension. It’s like this unspoken spectre lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce. But little do you know; menopause is a journey that extends beyond the individual; it impacts everyone.
Your mother, who raised you with endless love and unwavering strength. Your sister, your trusted companion of childhood. A wife, your partner in every adventure, whose smile lights up your world on the dark days. Friends, the pillars of support who have stood by you through thick and thin. These women, these warriors, are not immune to the effects of menopause.
We may well be aware of the rollercoaster of ageing that brings its own unique experiences for both men and women. For men, it might mean developing a bit of a round belly, thanks to changes in metabolism and hormonal shifts. It’s like our bodies decide to store souvenirs from our younger days right around the midsection.
Meanwhile, women go through the adventure of menopause, where hormonal imbalances lead to some unexpected symptoms and surprises. It’s like a spiral of hot flashes, mood swings, and yes, a tendency to gain weight in certain areas. The little bit of self-care they have built up over years of looking after others before themselves seems to dwindle. Menopause isn’t just about the hot flashes and mood swings or even brain fog. It’s a transformative experience that reshapes bodies, minds, and relationships.

Did we ever think? Amidst hushed whispers and uneasy feelings, lies a profound reality. There’s a sort of beauty in the menopausal journey. It’s the silent struggle of sleepless nights and fluctuating emotions. The quiet resilience of facing physical changes and grappling with identity shifts.
It’s the bittersweet realisation of saying goodbye to fertility while embracing newfound wisdom and freedom. A testament to the resilience of the human spirit, a celebration of the feminine essence in all its complexity. It’s a reminder that age is not a barrier to growth, that every stage of life brings its own challenges and triumphs and that our bodies seem to have a sense of humour as we navigate these new chapters of life.
Because in the end, menopause is not just a word, it’s a shared experience that unites us all in empathy, understanding, and love.
Do we really understand what it actually is? How long does it last? What is happening?
