WEAVE: Senses
By Jo Phillips
Philippe Parreno is embracing the power of senses in his latest exhibition, utilising sight and sound in ‘How Can We Know the Dancer from the Dance.’
The French artist uses a white dance floor, which occupies the space of the pavilion from which sounds of invisible dancers echo. The footsteps and footfalls are taken from movements choreographed by the late Merce Cunningham, and performed by dancers of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
‘How Can We Know the Dancer from the Dance’ was first shown in the 2012 exhibition Dancing Around the Bride at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and featured again in the 2013 exhibition The Bride and the Bachelors at London’s Barbican Art Gallery, and is now available to see at the Schinkel Pavillon in Berlin, until 21 December 2014.
