Linen, silk, cashmere, all natural fabrics, and in a world where we are trying to cut back on plastics and manmade, natural can only be best. It’s the same, to a degree in fragrance, natural materials are very important to the quality of a scent.
So when two greats come together for a collaboration, one that engages so closely with nature and of course quality, the end result can only be magnificent. Meet step three in the scent story of Brioni and Michel Almairac. But before exploring this opus lets explore the partners.
Brioni is a company of firsts. A truly Italian luxury house based in Rome that specialises in sartorial menswear from ready-to-wear, leather goods, shoes, eyewear and fragrance, and provides a tailor-made bespoke service too.
Initially set up in Rome in 1945 by Nazareno Fonticoli and Gaetano Savini, with its name as a reference to the then named Italian Brionian Islands (now part of Croatia), a vacation destination for European jet-setters in the early twentieth century. This set the scene immediately for the luxury standards it has come to set. They were the first to introduce a menswear catwalk show, lighter fabrics, slimmer shapes with natural shoulders. On top of that the brand invented the trunk show (an event in which vendors present merchandise directly to store personnel or customers) and Prêt Couture.
Michel Almairac left Norbert Stumpfl right
So when they decide it is time to move into fragrance Michel Almairac was the perfect partner. After all, this is a meeting of impeccable tastes. This highly regarded perfumer has produced one of not just some of the best selling fragrances across the world today but also one the best perfumer-owned fragrance lines. Parle Moi De Parfum. And much like Brioni it’s about the ingredients that make the final product. A real signature of his scents are the use of four or five multi-faceted ingredients only and by doing so allowing them to be explored singularly and together. This level of skill in perfumery is as much an art-form and the designing and sewing of the most luxurious clothing.
Both share another aesthetic, simplicity which of course is just an illusion that great masters can pull off. We know the duck glides across the water seemingly serenely but that below where we cant see, those feet are paddling for the ‘duck olympics’. That is one of the ultimately beauties of talent; materials, skill and craft.
So what of this their third scent crafted together ? Inspired by Brioni Design Director Norbert Stumpfl’s vision, Brioni Eau de Parfum Éclat reprises the streamlined, square-shouldered silhouette of the houses’ signature fragrance line; the very essence of elegance.
The word Éclat in the titles refers to brightness” or “brilliance” in French which highlight the burst of freshness on first breathing in the elixir.
Think of a dazzling bright morning in Italy, during summer. Start that day with vibrant, juicy Grapefruit, sparkling with cool pink Pepper. But the intriguing note you sense is that of Frankincense which is similar to that of rosemary, pine sap, and sweet amber, that share some common elements likes resins, woods and soft smoke but here is bright and fresh. Strong and natural like the hardy linen of a summer suit.
A soft romantic flower middle of roses fills the nostrils next, like silk or nubuck suede its soft and caressing. A dry down brings a restful summer evening to mind with creamy soft sandalwood, sexy skin- like musk and Ambroxan the substitute for natural ambergris bringing a caramel creamy end.
Brioni have one of the best green programmes in fashion and continue this ethos sourcing in more sustainable ways, selecting environmentally and socially responsible ingredients for its fragrances. Brioni Eau de Parfum Éclat blends natural sustainable materials, is vegan, cruelty-free and free from artificial colouring.
This is a fragrance created to be worn on casual days but works perfectly for day and evening because ultimately this is almost a synesthesic approach where the perfumer and designer exchanged ideas, scents, textures and images mixing the magic and holding it in a bootle. So know when dressed in linen, silk, or even suede for summer days and night you know, thanks to them, what these luxury items smell of in our wildest imaginations here artisanally crafted in the most excellent of hands
