Cover: Marina Abramovic covers more ground
By Jo Phillips
Until the 25th of August Marina Abramovic, the worlds most celebrated and well known performance artist, will take up residence at Serpentine Gallery, 10am-6pm, 6 days a week. The piece, 512 hours, requires the audience to surrender all of their technology, jackets, and belongings at the door, entering with nothing, and leaving with the artist herself: “I am their leaving material” she boldly states in her introduction video on the Serpentine Gallery’s website.
Abramovic has been in performance art for decades now, and was known for her dangerous and sometimes life-threatening stunts. This time she is taking the audience as her subjects, a common trope in performance art, and striping down the gallery space to just the audience, a small selection of props that may or may not be used, and the artist herself.
The exhibition runs from July 11 till August 25 and is free of charge. For more information visit the page on Serpentine Gallery’s website here.
