July Is Open to The Elements in Fashion

July’s monthly theme is Open. And seeing as it is Hot Hot Hot (maybe only the odd day) no one wants to wear anything heavy. Translating this into the world of fashion, exploring the transitional season, looking at Spring Summer 2024 and Autumn Winter 2024 collections from designers whose collections feature cut-out elements in fabrics, cut-of garments alongside silhouettes that showcase body parts, alongside subtle details of sheer fabrics give an illusion of openness. Let the breeze filter right through you.
Whether you live in a place where the sun is relentless or a climate where the sun only peeks out occasionally summer brings the joy of fewer clothes, fewer layers and this season, lots of cut-outs, bare skin and mid-fits on show. Enjoy this openness as long as the weather permits.
Spring Summer 24 from Valentino is a perfect example of the exploration of Open. Using cut-out details across the whole collection creates a unique pattern in the fabric. As well as low-cut components and two-piece sets that expose the body leaving it unguarded to the elements.
Y/Projects’ Spring Summer 24 collection uses mini shapes and cuts of tops and skirts to expose body parts, adding slits in skirts for more exposure. Lace fabrics are also subtly injected into the collection adding a different depth to the feeling of release.
A perfect example of transitioning through seasons is both the Spring Summer 24 (images) and Autumn Winter 24 collections (video) from Dior. Spring Summer uses sheer fabrics in a variety of different alignments that show shoulders and other body parts. The Autumn Winter collection also uses lace fabrics and cropped details. The campaign video itself is shot outside, capturing the essence of travel and being out in the open.
Copernis’ collection uses see-through material throughout the collection, in silhouettes that feel very elegant and elevated. Blazers and trousers are paired with bikini-style tops to leave the body bare, and Menswear pieces use sheer low-cut tops creating an overall disrobed feel to the entire collection.
Anna Suis’ Spring Summer 24 collection injects major colour into this theme. A more subtle and slight way to approach this theme, mainly through thin patterned fabrics and cuts that unveil the body, this creates an open feel. Lace-up corset details in the dress as well as the use of broderie anglaise create natural open textures.
The Spring Summer 24 collection from Supriya Lele uses a mix of distress and sophistication to inject an uncovered feel. Completely sheer looks are seen alongside fabrics that have heavily cut details. As well as revealing cuts and details that expose the sides of the body creating unusual and unique outcomes.
Diesel’s Spring Summer 24 collection is another brand that takes the distressed route to follow the open theme. Distressed lace is heavily used throughout the collection in a variety of colours. This can be seen in both women’s and men’s pieces showcasing that exposure and openness can be styled in limitless ways.
Looking deeper into menswear, the Spring Summer 24 collection from Andreas Moskin showcases subtle and minor incision details in shirts and alongside low-cut blazers. A perfect example of how open doesn’t have to be full of dissection and can be for everyone.
Exploring all areas of the industry, Oriana Capaldi Ciudad’s collection uses an all-pink palette for her Barbie collection. Showcasing a more wearable and everyday vision of the open theme. Using different experimentation slits that expose different parts of the body, creating outfits that can be dressed up or dressed down.
Gabriela Heart is another designer who uses different textures and fabrics to showcase the open trend. From lace, fishnet and translucent fabrics to add layers and depth to the collection. This can also be seen translated into menswear creating transparent trousers and shirts.
