By Jo Phillips
Solo travel is on the rise among British travellers with individuals seeking exciting adventures and fulfilling experiences. According to research from Neilson Beach Clubs, travelling alone is a significant trend for 2024 with more than two-thirds of people considering holidaying on their own. Reasons vary with over half wanting the freedom to do whatever they want while almost 30% would like to use the opportunity to meet new people.
But, if you’re new to travelling alone, it can be a little overwhelming. And with so many destinations to choose from, it can be challenging to find the ideal location for a solo holiday.
We’ll explore some the key factors when considering a solo trip along with underrated destinations that promise to offer incredible experiences off the beaten path.
Welcoming communities
When holidaying alone, seeking out locations with friendly locals can enrich your travel experience.
Portuguese villages
Portugal is renowned for its warm hospitality and its small villages are no exception. Places like Monsanto, Sortelha and Marvão are full of culture with their villages characterised by cobbled streets, medieval castles and traditional Portuguese houses.
In Monsanto, known as the “most Portuguese village in Portugal,” you can explore ancient stone houses built around giant boulders and enjoy stunning views from the castle ruins. Sortelha features a well-preserved medieval architecture and offers a serene atmosphere perfect for leisurely strolls. Marvão, perched on a high hill, provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
These villages are ideal for single travellers due to their friendly, tight-knit communities. Locals are often eager to share stories and traditions, making it easy to feel at home.
Costa Rican towns
The country is famous for its biodiversity and commitment to eco-friendly tourism. It also has several small towns that offer unique experiences for those holidaying on their own.
Montezuma is located on a remote part of the Nicoya Peninsula, is known for its bohemian vibe and beautiful beaches. Santa Teresa, a haven for surfers and yogis, offers a laid-back atmosphere with plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. La Fortuna, near the Arenal Volcano, is perfect for those seeking adventure with its hot springs, waterfalls, and numerous hiking trails.
The friendly locals and strong community spirit ensure that visitors quickly feel part of the town’s daily life.
Unique experiences
For those looking to connect with nature, wildlife safaris offer an unforgettable experience.
Wildlife safaris
Destinations such as Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Kenya’s Maasai Mara and South Africa’s Kruger National Park are renowned for incredible wildlife-spotting and stunning landscapes. The nature of most of these safari tours lend them well to solo travellers, offering the opportunity to meet others and share wonderful experiences. You’ll also discover unique accommodations such as safari lodges or tents.
Ski holidays in Andorra
Andorra’s El Tarter is an underrated gem for solo travellers looking for exhilarating ski holidays. Part of the Grandvalira ski area, El Tarter offers a range of slopes suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced skiers.
It’s also known for its vibrant après-ski scene, cosy mountain lodges and alpine scenery. The communal atmosphere of ski resorts makes it easy for solo travellers to join in social events and meet new friends. The area also offers other winter activities like snowshoeing and dog sledging, ensuring a diverse and exciting holiday experience.
Safety and Security
Finally, safety is a primary concern if you’re travelling on your own so it’s wise to choose a destination that’s known for its welcoming nature, low crime rate and nearby amenities. It’s also a good idea to get prepared ahead of your trip by getting any recommended vaccinations and taking out travel insurance.
