How Fashion Pieces Become Cult Favourites
There have been some iconic fashion pieces over the years. Flared trousers in the 70s, denim in the 80s, leather jackets in the 90s, our list could go on, and we’re sure you can think of others. But how does an item reach such heights in fashion? Read on to find out.
The Power of Celebrity Endorsement
Celebrity endorsements are up there with the most influential factors that can turn a fashion piece into a cult favourite. Once it comes out that a popular figure has worn a particular cloth or accessory, its fame rises instantly. Whether it’s an elaborate marketing scheme or the celebrity is simply wearing a new item of clothing, people love to copy what they see the rich and the famous wearing. And who can blame them – these people have the money to pick a good style.
For example, think about the famous Kate Middleton effect. Almost everything she puts on sells out within moments. Sometimes, it may be a designer dress or even just a high-street coat, but her choice usually becomes something everyone wants to own. Similarly, when people like Rihanna or Kanye West switch to new fads, these items sell rapidly.
And don’t get us started on n Hailey Bieber and her ultimate clean girl aesthetic.
The Possibilities of the Online World
Fashion trends are also shaped by the digital world, especially since the arrival of NFTs. For years now, people have been spending more and more time online, with the iGaming space being one of the biggest benefactors.
According to a recent study, the number of iGamers has risen to about 100 million, and this has allowed for some innovation in the online space – including blockchain-based games that offer a virtual space for people to explore, buy, and sell NFTs, including avatars and fashion pieces. To break it down, just as an iGaming platform might offer exclusive roulette game releases, these virtual worlds offer exclusive fashion NFTs, virtual handbags, sneakers, or catwalk dresses.
Plenty of fashion companies have jumped on board, with Gucci, Prada, and Givenchy all having NFT collections, and this has similarly led to more interaction, excitement, and engagement from fashion lovers. They might be virtual fashion pieces inside a giant virtual game, but their ability to go viral and become cult favourites is even more increased.
Limited Editions and Collaborations
Exclusivity is highly valued in the fashion industry, as limited edition pieces with star-studded collaborations make them the most sought-after. When brands announce limited runs or special collaborations, they touch on people’s innate desire to own things that not everyone else has. Plus, it’s just the allure of having something exclusive, and that not everyone can have.
Think about collections like the Supreme x Louis Vuitton or Nike x Off-White. These partnerships unite massive brand identities into unique products that sound so exclusive. The hype around these creates a way for them to be sold out almost instantly.
The Role of Fashion Events and Dress Codes
Fashion events and dress codes contribute significantly towards making items cult status. Some examples include the Met Gala, Paris and London Fashion Week, the Oscars, etc, becoming platforms where stunning fashion can be showcased, motivating the masses. The outfits at the Met Gala are absolutely insane.
Another example is Audrey Hepburn’s dress worn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which became a classic that has continuously been imitated and adored over decades. There are tons of examples we could give!
And as you can tell, most of the reasons items become cult favourites are celebrities and social media.
For a fashion item to go from being just an ordinary outfit into something iconic, it must look iconic. It must be plastered on social media, on the backs of celebrities, and generally become part of a cultural phenomenon. Even if that phenomenon only lasts a few weeks or months, it still becomes a temporary cult favourite.
