Morning Smoke
By Yasmin Sholgami
Up and coming band, Morning Smoke, consist of four young men, who together, create music that is cultured beyond their years. Though budding in both age and experience, Morning Smoke have already been backed by NME, Radio 1 and Q Magazine with Artrocker magazine naming them ‘The band to watch in 2014’. The Brighton based group of four have said they believe their sound is ‘noisy pop’, where indie lyrics collide with attitude-fuelled rock.
‘In Euphoria’ is their debut album which is released in the UK on 4th May and features only six songs, yet amongst them are some very courageous tracks and sounds. Opening track ‘DYWD’ was recently voted Song of the Week on BBC Radio 1’s Review Show.
The album is heavily drum based with hints of vulnerable ghostly vocals, with moments of ghostly vocals simmering underneath. This recurrent theme is ever-present in the bands vigorous musical ensembles and their mysterious lyrics. ‘In Euphoria’ is an atmospheric album with haunting vocals and I think we can easily say that Morning Smoke neatly slots into a genre we have mastered and dominated for the past 50 years, British rock. They take all the finest parts of traditional rock, whack in some fresh indie beats, to produce a sound that is as worthy as it is reckless. Keep your eyes on this band; this is only the beginning.
Morning Smoke’s sound is so authentic and uncontrolled that you won’t be able to stop yourself from head bopping along. ‘In Euphoria’ presents itself in such a high level of raw sound and representing the very best of traditional rock.
