Finding Calm in the Midst of Chaos
By Shreya Samanta
When you’re jetting off somewhere, airports often feel like a whirlwind of chaos. But what if, amidst the hustle and bustle, you could find a serene space that transforms the travel experience? Aesop transforms travel retail with serene design, creating a calm sanctuary in the midst of the airport frenzy. Their stores, like the one in Shanghai Hongqiao and Suzhou, are perfect examples of how Aesop transforms travel retail with serene design, blending cultural heritage with modern minimalism to offer travelers a peaceful oasis where they can pause, reflect, and recharge. At the heart of their travel retail design is a mission to offer serenity, turning ordinary spaces into extraordinary experiences. Take, for instance, their store in Shanghai Hongqiao’s Terminal 2, a sanctuary of thoughtful design inspired by the feeling of being suspended in time and space during a flight. Here, the rhythm of ticking clocks, each set to a different time zone, feels less like a reminder of your next connection and more like a poetic nod to the universality of travel. Deep blue acoustic panels evoke the stillness of a night sky, while crescent-shaped pathways guide you through softly lit displays of their signature amber jars and bottles. At the center, dual basins invite you to pause and experience Aesop’s formulations firsthand, a grounding ritual before the next leg of your journey.
But Aesop’s pursuit of tranquility transcends the terminal. Their newly opened Suzhou Cangjie store is a masterpiece that seamlessly blends heritage and innovation. Collaborating with Shanghai’s Offhand Practice, Aesop took residence in Phoenix Hall, a beautifully preserved late Qing Dynasty building adorned with intricate phoenix carvings. Originally situated on Ganjiang Road, the hall was dismantled due to urban development and painstakingly reconstructed. The result is a space where ancient craftsmanship meets modern minimalism, creating a sanctuary of balance and beauty.
Drawing inspiration from Suzhou’s renowned classical gardens, the interior is meticulously organized to reflect the grid-like structure of Zhao, a design philosophy that allows spaces to feel connected yet distinct. Translucent silk panels offer gentle separation, while communal sandstone basins at the center foster social interaction, mirroring the ceremonial essence of traditional gardens. Overhead, a glowing silk lantern, embroidered by a local artisan, casts a warm, inviting light.
For those seeking solitude, Aesop offers private nooks with a singular basin, mirror, and cabinet, inviting an intimate exploration of their unconventional products. At the farthest corner, a Fragrance Armoire, its copper-handled doors reminiscent of Qing Dynasty furniture, beckons guests to discover their extraordinary range of Eaux de Parfum. Antique Chinese chairs, sourced from a local market, are scattered throughout, offering a restful perch for contemplation.
Whether you’re navigating a terminal or the streets of Suzhou, Aesop transforms the everyday into an oasis. Each detail, be it the thoughtful use of antique furniture or the rhythmic placement of amber bottles, reflects their commitment to creating spaces that soothe the senses and elevate the experience. So, the next time you find yourself wandering, whether through an airport or a historic district, take a moment to indulge in a bit of serenity, it’s a journey worth savoring.
