Opposites: Precious in any Case
By Jo Phillips
Jane Hilton – Precious – Eleven
Opposites are rooted within Jane Hilton’s work, which challenges the stereotypes imposed by society by presenting the preciousness of Nevada working girls in her latest exhibition. Aptly entitled ‘Precious’, the nude photographic study shot using a plate camera explores the scope of meaning of the word from the connotation of a dear or beloved one to something of unique value. Like the word beauty, preciousness is subjective and Hilton invites viewers to make the final judgement of whether these women are precious like any other woman through bearing everything about them – from their cultural backgrounds, ages and body shapes to their narrative, dignity and strength.
Jane Hilton’s ‘Precious’ runs now till Saturday, 25 May 2013 at Eleven, 11 Eccleston Street, London. She will be signing books today from 18:00 to 20:00 at The Photographers’ Gallery.
