Bold: Matisse: The Late Lithographs
By Jo Phillips
Do you want to own a piece of art history? Thanks to the Trowbridge Gallery, 39 rare Matisse lithographs from 1954 are now available to for you to purchase.
Matisse’s late works, or ‘gouaches d’eacutecoupé’ were large scale, paper cut outs that defined 20th century art. Vibrant, fresh, simple yet abstract pieces, Matisse liked to describe the process as ‘painting with scissors’, or ‘drawing directly in colour’.
Not just posters or reproductions, these prints are the original lithographs from 1954, including his signature blue nudes that show the artists genius in creating something utterly simple, playful, geometrical and ahead of his time.
The gallery is running this one off exhibition until July 11th on London’s Kings Road.
