Woven; 10 Steps to create a Calm and Relaxing Bedroom
By Jo Phillips
Your bedroom is one of the most important rooms in your home, and it should be a cosy, comfortable retreat for you to relax in and enjoy. Whether you use soothing colour schemes, luxurious bedding, or unique décor to make your room stand out from the rest, your bedroom is your personal space for winding down, and it can have a bigger impact on your sleeping habits than you might realise. If you’ve been suffering from a lack of sleep or have trouble relaxing and winding down at night, then your bedroom could be to blame. We’ve put together a list of some of the best bedroom upgrades to take on if you want to get a better night’s sleep.
Tip #1. Use One Colour:
Sticking to one colour for your bedroom is a great way to make it look and feel as cosy as possible. Blue is an excellent choice of colour if you’re hoping to relax; it’s been found to lower your blood pressure and improve your sleep quality. If you opt for a dark colour on your walls, you can balance it out by using lighter shades for your ceiling, bedding, and carpets. A crisp, brilliant white ceiling can help offset any darker tones taking up the majority of your room.
Tip #2. Use Wallpaper to Make a Statement:
If painting your room in all one colour isn’t for you, you might want to consider using wallpaper to make a statement. Painting three walls of your room in one colour and using patterned or stand-out wallpaper behind your bed can really make your room stand out and break up the space. Or you could go for a toned-down wallpaper and use it for all four walls. The most important thing is that you go for a colour and pattern that you enjoy and will help you relax and wind down the most. Tip #3. Splash Out on Your Bedding:
Investing in some high-quality, luxurious bedding for your room can make all the difference when it comes to your sleep pattern and quality. Choose from Egyptian cotton, silk, or another luxurious and comfortable material to help you relax and wind down at night. Opt for colours and patterns that are soothing and conducive to relaxation. Plain white bedding can be very relaxing and easy on the eye; or, choose a design that you personally find relaxing. Light pastel colours such as light blue, yellow, or pale pink can add a relaxing and comfortable vibe to your room.
Tip #4. Pile Up on Pillows:
Remember the golden rule that your bedroom cannot be too comfortable! Pile up comfortable pillows on your bed and use soft, luxurious throws to sink into after a long day at the office. If you enjoy reading a good book before going to sleep, plump pillows are essential for propping yourself up without causing any back pain or stiffness. Layering accessories can quickly make your bedroom look cosier than ever before, creating the inviting atmosphere that you’ll love returning home to.
Tip #5. Incorporate Relaxing Scents:
Bear in mind that it’s not just the look and feel of your room that can make a difference to your sleeping habits; the scents in your bedroom can also make a massive difference to how easy or difficult you find it to drop off to sleep. Scented candles are a great way to add a lovely scent to your bedroom; lavender is an excellent choice if you’re hoping to relax you and gentle candlelight can add a cosy ambience to the space. Or, you can drop essential oils into textiles in your room; a few drops on your pillow or blanket can freshen up your room or envelop you in a relaxing and inviting scent as you drop off to sleep.
Tip #6. Add Personal Touches:
Personal touches in your bedroom can be a great way to finish off the overall look and add your own stamp to the room. Photographs of yourself with family or friends, souvenirs that you’ve collected on memorable trips, or unique gifts from people close to you can help to turn your room into the relaxing haven that you deserve. Other items can also help to put your own personal touch on things; whether it’s quirky art that you enjoy or vintage furniture items that you’ve refurbished yourself.
Tip #7. Keep it Clutter-Free:
When it comes to keeping your room relaxing and inviting, keeping clutter at bay is absolutely essential. Adding smart storage solutions to your room is a great way to create somewhere to keep your things where they are in easy reach while avoiding cluttering up your room. For example, under-bed storage can be one of the best ways to store clothing that you won’t be needing for a few months, extra bedding, or keeping your shoes off the floor. Drawers in bedside tables or a dressing table can also be used to keep your makeup, beauty and personal grooming products out of the way, or opt for ottomans at the bottom of your bed for storing textiles, blankets and pillows while also providing a comfortable place to sit. To maintain a clutter-free and minimalistic look in your bedroom, consider a white bed for a minimalistic look as a centerpiece, which not only adds a touch of simplicity but also seamlessly complements various storage solutions for an organized and serene living space.
Tip #8. Minimise Technology:
If you can help it, keeping your bedroom a tech-free zone can be one of the best ways to make it easier for you to fall into a deep and relaxing sleep at night. If you must have a television in your room, try to keep it off during the evenings at least an hour before you go to sleep. Using too many technology items and looking at screens before you sleep can make it more difficult for you to relax since the blue light affects your body’s melanin production, keeping you awake as a result. Similarly, you should try to keep any smartphone or tablet charging stations away from your bed to avoid being tempted to use these gadgets during the night.
Tip #9. Add a Desk:
Getting on with daily tasks in bed can seem convenient at the time, but it can actually have a massive impact on your sleeping pattern in a very negative way. Working in bed, for example, will quickly become routine and your brain will start to associate bed with work, rather than relaxing and sleeping. As a result, you’ll find it much harder to wind down and sleep when the time comes finally. Instead, adding a desk to your room provides you with a dedicated space where you can work on projects, browse the web, or study.
Tip #10. Be Patient:
Last but not least, be patient with your bedroom transformation and don’t expect it to happen overnight. Depending on the current state of your bedroom, it could take anything from a few days to a few months to get the results that you want. Be patient and take your time; don’t forget that things like painting and wallpapering take time, so don’t try and rush it.
