Photographer Jacob Felländer’s exhibition at the Hamiltons Gallery in Mayfair opens on September 26th and runs until November 1. The exhibition features 16 large format works by the photographer, focused on exploring the boundary between photograph and painting. To accomplish this, Felländer layers his work in such a way as to allow traces of earlier work to show through. The exhibition marks a divergence from Felländer’s typical style as he uses charcoal and chalk to highlight the layers and negatives that make up the backbone of the pieces.

The photographs were taken from a single hotel room window in New York City, which also marks a transition from the large kaleidoscopic images of urban scenes Felländer is typically known for. Using these multiexposed images Felländer is able to play with time, space, and perspective using his relatively new, multifaceted approach. As Felländer says himself, he doesn’t classify himself as either photographer or artist as “A photograph is a medium for art, like paint and marble… art is a verb, not a title.”
