Generally watches fit into three categories, manual movements, a hand-wound style, the oldest type of watch, automatic, or self-winding, movement is a mechanical movement first marketed in the beginning decades of the 20th century, and quartz watches. The latter two are of course automated by internal movements and batteries what about a fully electronic watch? find out more in our article Watch It here.
In 1960 when the first-ever fully electronic watch was launched it was seen as groundbreaking and an important innovation in the world of watching making. The Accutron changed the way the world told time with the most accurate timekeeping mechanism ever created and the first personal timekeeping advancement seen in 300 years. Ruling the watch world for more than a decade, its foundational technology later became an integral component of America’s space program and The Accutron logo became a symbol to the consumer of timekeeping accuracy.
The proprietary Accutron movement powered by electrostatic energy is created by twin turbines that rotate as a result of human motion at incredible speeds between two electrodes affixed to the movement.
The energy, stored in an accumulator, powers two motors; a world’s first electrostatic motor fuelling the fluid second hand and a step motor powering the hour and minute hands. Both motors are synchronized through integrated circuits to provide accuracy to +/- 5 seconds a month.
Now, after a decade of dedicated research and development, Accutron unveils the Spaceview 2020. Recreating the stunning visual impact of the original open dial design with the exact-same signature green accents with the all-new electrostatic energy movement, Accutron commemorates the Spaceview’s place in avant-garde timepiece history.
Born in an era of unparalleled risk-taking, the 1960s Accutron Spaceview was a landmark achievement and immediate sensation. By deconstructing the design of the outer case and exposing the state-of-the-art tuning fork movement, it transformed into the purest example of design integrity and technical excellence. Over time, it became an iconic masterpiece. The new style boasts a stainless steel case and bezel on a fine black leather strap.
Reimagined for a new generation, it elevates the bar with modernist-minimal aesthetics mixed with sci-fi touches, yet still achieves a technical high-water mark. The collection’s four new styles feature open skeletonised movements that showcase the precision of the electrostatic energy drive and high-tech rubber straps with deployment closures, adding a sportier look.
