Essence of Gold
By Lauren Tighe
Gone fishin’ a term we associate with gentle good times, the idea that sitting by the river, rod in hand waiting for the fish to come and eat is a world-known pastime much loved by many as a way to relax; a time to be at one with nature. We now know we need to look at how we fish, for its sustainability and our own because after all, fishing is so important in feeding us and sustaining a healthy economy as well as a healthy planet. But what about fishing as a sustainable beauty benefit? In Essence of Gold we deep dive into the inky blue depths of the Ocean, a universe of its own, to marvel at the rarities and treasures of mother nature, and how to sustainably use them to boost our beauty routine.
Water covers 71% of the World’s surface and from it, we get food, drink, minerals, and power. The Omega 3 we get from eating fish, for example, has so many benefits for our health from fighting auto-immune diseases to softening the skin, yet there is more to be found in the depths.
There are many aquatic lifeforms that are much older than man, some are even prehistoric. By nurturing these creatures, we can harness their gifts, in a way that is mutually beneficial for us and the planet.
Valmont’s l’Elixir des Glaciers: Essence of Gold Sturgeon
One of these pre-historic creatures is the sturgeon, one of the oldest breeds of fish alive, with an existence stretching back to 30 million years ago and a life span of 100 years. Recognised by their charming, upturned snouts, wild sturgeons can be found gracefully swimming in the coasts of Eurasia and North America. Unfortunately, like many of nature’s gifts, we took them for granted in the past by over-fishing, however, in 2010, there was a crack-down against fishing them, making sturgeons a protected species.

To support nature, Valmont’s l’Elixir des Glaciers range is working with a sturgeon farm in South-West France, who was selected for their approach to breading high-quality fish, both sustainably and ethically. They nurture the sturgeons, ensuring they have high quality of life and in turn l’Elixir des Glaciers ethically harvests the sturgeons’ milt for some of their DNA molecules. This DNA is sourced because of its anti-aging qualities, which is the make up of l’Elixir des Glaciers’ new skincare range, Essence of Gold Sturgeon. In harvesting the DNA in the most ethical and sustainable way l’Elixir des Glaciers has found a way of nurturing these prehistoric creatures, in the same way, that their DNA nurtures our skin.

Essence of Gold Sturgeon brings the mysterious powers of the underwater world to your dressing table. The ingredients are rare, sublime, and marvellous, providing you with the pinnacle of skincare. l’Elixir des Glaciers’ never-ending quest for the most natural beauty, has seen them explore the power of plants in their Collection Précieuse, and the power of bees and their beehives in their Collection Majestueuse. Now they explore the rare precious DNA of the Golden Sturgeon.
Out of the 24 species of Golden Sturgeon, l’Elixir des Glaciers have specially selected 3 species, for their unmatchable quality. Two strains of DNA are selected from the fish to complement each other and provide the best results. The long-stranded DNA, which is of high molecular weight, is sourced from the Diamond Sturgeon and the Siberian Sturgeon. This long strand incorporates with your skin over time, creating regenerative restoration to the skin cells in the long term. The short-stranded DNA is sourced from the White Sturgeon, which provides fast-absorbing elements, creating immediate results.
The DNA does three important things, firstly it blocks elastase, which is an enzyme that degrades your skins natural elasticity, secondly it stimulates the production of proteoglycan, which supports supple skin, and thirdly its active ingredients are released over time, giving you a consistently glowing complexion. Sturgeon is not the only treasure from the ocean, minerals are nature’s miracles, especially from the sea where they absorb coral algae, and a complex range of salts.
l’Elixir des Glaciers are aware of these treasures’ value, using three high-performing, enriching minerals: Magnesium, Manganese, and Selenium. Magnesium reduces stress and fatigue of the skin, creating radiance. The Manganese is a metabolic booster, which works as an energy catalyst, improving the absorption of the minerals into the skin cells. Lastly the Selenium is a powerful antioxidant, capturing any free radicals, to fight against toxins that dull the complexion.
To add the element of Je ne sais quoi, the formula incorporates l’Elixir des Glaciers’ signature fragrance, creating the ultimately luxurious experience. Vanilla and amber delicately powder a woody/floral base of rose, cedar, and lily of the valley. This cosy base is uplifted by fleeting, delicate top notes – the place where levity and opulence meet.
l’Elixir des Glaciers’ formula comes in two forms, a serum, and a cream, which work together as part of a skincare ritual. Each of the products is created using nano-emulsion technology, which makes them extra fine and sumptuously silky when applied to the skin. The serum, Fluide Merveilleux, remineralises the skin, whilst evening the texture and activating radiance, then you apply the cream, Crème Merveilleuse, which smooths and plumps the skin, whilst removing any signs of discolouration. When used together they transform your complexion whilst treating your skin to a breathtakingly sensory experience, leaving you with a glow from within.
As the World advances with knowledge of technology and science, it is becoming ever-more important to protect mother nature. As explored in Essence of Gold, l’Elixir des Glaciers have respected nature whilst sourcing and appreciating her miraculous gifts. The good fisherman knows when to throw the fish back in the water to keep balance. It shows that we do not have to demand from and use nature, but rather work together in harmony to produce exceptional results in both our skincare and other areas of our lives.
