Our monthly theme, ‘Cover,’ explores the concept of wrapping, concealment, and oversized silhouettes in fashion. The collections below showcase looks that utilize heavy wrapping, often achieved through garments that wrap around the body, concealing its shape. Oversized pieces like scarves, coats, and garments with exaggerated/ sculptural silhouettes are prominent. This McQueen collection showcases traditional wrapping techniques in coats, jumpers, and jackets. However, it injects drama with oversized details, ranging from grand scarves and imposing jacket overlays to more subtle yet impactful oversized collars and sleeves.
This collection, exploring the captivating interplay between myth and reality, stage and off-stage, dressed and undressed, person and persona, and sorcery and seduction, is a dramatic and bold exploration of these themes. Erdem’s signature elegance is evident, with many looks featuring full-length silhouettes that envelop/cover the wearer in a sumptuous array of heavy fabrics and textures.
This Kiko Kostadinov collection offers a fresh perspective on the theme, exploring the profound impact of transit – the journeys we embark upon – on the women we become. Garments with warped silhouettes emerge as a slightly different expression of this concept, capturing a sense of motion and movement that warp with the body, as well as cover.
S.S Daley offers a unique perspective on the “cover” theme, drawing inspiration from British public schools and seaside towns. Oversized scarves are a key element, perfectly embodying the theme. Additionally, the collection features a striking contrast: oversized collars on coats and jackets completely cover the upper half of the silhouette, while the lower half remains exposed.
This collection is a perfect example of proportions and sculptural silhouettes, that feature garments that dramatically warp the body can be another approach. Through a minimalist yet sensual approach, this collection invites us to consider the “cover” theme from every conceivable angle.
Visibly chunky knits and scarves are paired with both sportswear and formalwear in this David Koma collection, providing an authentic glimpse into the world of London menswear. The collection also showcases the dramatic use of oversized fur scarves to cover the body, adding a touch of luxury and sophistication.
Diesel’s collection focuses on elevation while simultaneously addressing the issue of waste within the fashion industry. Many looks incorporate recycled materials as design elements, creating unique details. Distressed garments and fringe add movement and flow, while figure-hugging fabrics both cover and distort the body, resulting in unexpected and striking silhouettes.
Thom Browne, a master of silhouette, presents a collection that challenges traditional notions of covering the body. Multiple layers are expertly combined to create bold, oversized silhouettes. With shape and structure at the heart of every piece, this collection, presented in a natural colour palette, demonstrates that covering the body can be a multi-dimensional and captivating experience, moving beyond the simple application of a single piece of fabric.
Acne Studios is renowned for its clean and fresh approach to oversized garments, offering a spectrum of styles from subtle to bold. This “domestic alien” collection pushes the boundaries, incorporating surreal fabrics and warped silhouettes. It demonstrates that covering the body can be both visually captivating and surprisingly revealing.
