Love Beyond The Lines Of Expectation in Fashion

By Rebecca McNelly-Tilford

August’s theme is Metaphor, exploring the concept of what we see and what we think we see. Within fashion, it is here we see the expected coming together. Think of contrasting fabrics that could be considered unusual or clashing. Looking into the details of styling, pairing items of clothing or accessories with something that is out of the ordinary and, of course, clashing colours and patterns. The Autumn Winter 2024 collections from the designers below show different examples of how contrasting can be taken from minimal to maximal. Also, it throws up questions as to what goes together in one outfit? Find out more in Love Beyond The Lines Of Love Expectation in Fashion.

Ports 1961

The Autumn Winter 24 collection from Ports 1961 is a more subtle and understated vision of contrast. This is a perfect example of how a key use of styling can create this vibe, pairing oversized coats with cocktail dresses and sequin dresses with chunky boots to challenge the expected into the unexpected. It throws up a question as to when do we wear these unexpected pairings? Whenever and whenever you want.

McQueen by Seán McGirr

This collection from McQueen is a contrast of cuts and shapes, pairing oversized tops with sleek bottoms. Alongside this fabrics and textures are paired together in unusual ways, like knitwear and leather or denim and fur. Always an underlying question texture versus structure.

Chén Sifān

This collection from Chén Sifãn is another example of using styling to create a clash. Lines are clean, yet sometimes they are slim. Other times they are wide, a balance of two halves.

XIAOLI

Xiaoli uses fabrics in a variety of textures to complement yet contrast each other. Pairing leather and lace, as well as tinsel and denim. This creates a transformable from the day-to-night theme or maybe a silent disco in the afternoon.

MM6 Maison Margiela

MM6 takes the bold and intense cuts that have become a signature of the brand. Sharp shapes sit against nipped-in waists. Form does not follow function. However, a play of blocks and pattern colours highlights the silhouette.

Rabanne

Rabannes Autumn Winter 24 collection goes back to the roots of what you imagine a clashing look to encompass. Piling on layers that come in a variety of patterns, prints, textures and cuts that you think shouldn’t work together but just do. Again, feel free to where, when, and how the vision takes you.

Loewe

Both the men’s and women’s Autumn Winter 24 collections from Loewe have almost contradictions; a heavy belt on a soft women’s floral dress. What does this mixed metaphor do? It brings new life to a core outfit staple. A men’s black mixes with summery print light trousers; an unexpected joining of male and female. For men, a print echoing the summer of love, all bright and happy, sit with black moc-croc black leather, almost punk-like trousers. A class on how to play with the accepted into fresh new metaphors. Both continuation of experimenting with the unordinary.

Undercover

This collection from Undercover uses a very clever technique of cutting and silhouette to create a unique silhouette. Each top half of the collection is just one garment that is layered together to give the illusion of multiple pieces. Pairing these ‘layers’ oozes contrast whilst almost creating a trick to the eye.
