Most people know that Tequila is one of the key ingredients in the recipe for perfect Margaritas, but Mezcal, its 1st cousin, remains relatively undiscovered by the masses. Despite being equally emblematic of Mexican spirits, Mezcal is often perceived as similar to Tequila.
That’s not true. There is a real difference between Tequila and Mescal. Mezcal encompasses all spirits derived from the agave plant, while Tequila specifically denotes a type of Mezcal crafted exclusively in five Mexican states from blue Weber agave.
Tequila often has a smoother, sweeter taste with notes of citrus and pepper, while Mezcal tends to have a more complex flavour profile, often characterized by smoky, earthy, and sometimes fruity notes, depending on the production methods and agave varieties used. Additionally, Mezcal can sometimes have a stronger alcohol presence and a more pronounced agave flavour compared to Tequila.
Casamigos, a renowned tequila and mezcal brand, boasts a rich history deeply rooted in friendship and a shared passion for exceptional spirits. Founded in 2013 by Hollywood royalty, actor George Clooney, along with friends Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman, Casamigos began as a personal endeavour to create the perfect tequila for their own enjoyment. Named after the Spanish words for “house of friends,” Casamigos quickly gained popularity for its smooth taste and high quality.
In Oaxaca, Mexico, the finest Espadín agaves are hand-selected for Casamigos Mezcal. Then, the piñas, the heart of the plant, are tenderly split and slow-roasted for 4-6 days in earthen pits lined with volcanic or river rock, ensuring even cooking without caramelization.
After a 24-hour cooling period, the agave is crushed by a Tahona wheel, a traditional tool made of large stones resembling a large disk, normally powered by animals or machinery.
In the process of making Mezcal, the Tahona wheel is used to crush the agave and extract its juice, aiding in the extraction of the agave’s natural flavours and aromas.
Fermentation takes place over 6-8 days, allowing nature to work its magic, before the Mezcal is double-distilled in covered copper pot stills, ensuring purity and refinement.
The result is a crystal-clear spirit with a captivating aroma of fragrant herbs and fruits, delicately intertwined with subtle hints of smoke. On the palate, find notes of smoke and black Pepper lead to a long, silky finish, leaving a lasting impression.
