Opera in Strange Times
By Jo Phillips
Opera is strange times, it may be not what we would expect during a literal world shut down, but actually there are minor miracles happening. For example, Grange Park Opera, Surrey, has discovered a major work by a renowned composer which has never been performed.
Sir John Tavener (1944–2013), was one of the most acclaimed British composers of the post-war years whose fans include HRH The Prince of Wales via the Beatles all the way to Bjork. He completed his final opera Krishna in 2005. But here the sound stopped.
In fact, for 14 years it has remained in manuscript form and has never been staged. Until now that is. Krishna will be performed for the first time ever in June 2024 at Grange Park Opera’s Theatre in the Woods. It will be directed by opera-giant Sir David Pountney.
