Opposites: Gardens in the City
By Jo Phillips
Grant Associates, UK award-winning design team responsible for Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, has been commissioned by Westminster City Council to get involved in a twenty-year infrastructure plan for London’s Church Street as a part of council’s housing renewal strategy.
Deficiency in natural open space and low tree coverage in the existing neighbourhood are about to change with underused estate gardens being brought into Public Realm and transformed to productive gardens, play spaces, rain gardens and green infrastructure. There are also further plans to create a new green corridor running North-South through the area and new civic buildings such as the college, health centre, library and market were proposed.
Phase one of the Infrastructure Plan and Public Realm Plan is estimated to take 5 years to complete with a budget of £16-18m. For more information visit Grant Associates website.
