The World of Powerful Fragrances; He or She?
By Baishali Banerjee
In the world of fragrances, brands have never ceased to offer a wide range of selections for males and females. But what is it, that makes these fragrances masculine or feminine? Is there any particular characteristic that either of the kinds needs to have to tick boxes for? Well, the answer is no. The concept of masculinity and femininity is less about one’s actual gender and more about how one feels. Why? Given that males and females both possess estrogen and progesterone (female and male hormones respectively), the concepts are more about what energy one feels. Let us step into the new year with variations of For Her and For Him Eau De Parfumes by celebrated perfumers from around the world that you can wear as you like. Let’s take a peek into the flora and fauna kingdom. Flowers and bees have co-evolved for millions of years, with the blooms spreading pollen to neighbouring plants and the bees feeding the flowers. Did you know Orange blossoms attract male bees as a result of their abundance of nectar?
Dolce&Gabanna brings to light a similar story by launching Devotion Eau De Parfum Intense designed For Her, where the middle note, which also happens to be the Scent of Orange Blossom leads to the beginning of a love story. A new facet to a love story but here with extra power.
Set at Capri’s Marina Grande and its iconic pier, the scene is filled with vintage fishing boats, orange blossoms’ aroma, and the joyous revellers’ cacophony. Katy Perry enjoys a sunny Mediterranean day while on vacation on the azure island in the Dolce & Gabbana Devotion Eau de Parfum and Eau de Parfum Intense campaign. Arriving at the pier, Katy catches the fleeting gaze of Michele Morrone, who plays a young local fisherman. Their destiny collides at that very time. They continue to be accomplices of their intense glances when they reunite at a later gathering. The Sacred Heart has sealed the start of a tale of love and devotion!
Look at the wonders of Orange blossom in radiating femininity. It’s when the unique and reassuring top notes of Hazelnut smoothly transition into heart notes of luminous and fresh Orange Blossom, culminating in a warm and sensual base of Madagascar Vanilla. Both of these ingredients are kept consistent with the original fragrance but are heightened here for intensity. With a fresh, cosy, and unique twist, this inventive mixture takes the wearer on an olfactory adventure inspired by Italy, its love stories and its cuisine.
Moving on to a masculine-energy fragrance; Jimmy Choo presents Jimmy Choo Man Extreme, the latest version of their classic men’s scent. Jimmy Choo Man Extreme is a bold, energetic, thrilling fougère that takes things to the next level.

What is fougére? Given that the word “fougere” is French for “fern,” it was created to describe better the fragrance’s fresh, green, and faintly woodsy qualities. This fragrance is an olfactory harmony rather than a single element to evoke the perfume of ferns in the forest. Needless to say, the essence of the scent is very masculine.
Let us see how, by diving into the notes of this perfume. With a heart that blends an aromatic accord of fresh and crisp geranium with clary sage, it has a fiery core and top notes of powerful piquancy from red thyme and black pepper. Tonka beans, zesty Vetiver, and vivid Amber woods make up the dry down, or the perfume that will remain the longest, creating a subtle yet enticing masculinity.
“The idea was also to modernise the classic fougère structure with a sensual warmth thanks to the tonka bean and amber woods that create a real signature.”
– Tanguy Guesnet, perfumer, Jimmy Choo.
This perfume has been designed for the kind of masculinity that has a strong mind and possesses leadership. It determines its destiny with a desire for novel experiences and the excitement of being outdoors.
The Jimmy Choo Man Extreme campaign, brought to life by Brazilian model, Marlon Teixeira, illustrates this perfume’s masculine energy best! Capturing the essence of the fragrance, Marlon embarks on an exhilarating journey.
Well, after going through the olfactory journeys of Dolce&Gabanna’s Devotion Eau de Parfum Intense and Jimmy Choo Man Extreme, we can all agree that masculinity and femininity bring out different energies. While masculinity could lean on being solemn, calm and reserved, femininity could be more about radiating a free mind with boldness and a sprinkle of playfulness. To empower this contagious feminine energy, Givenchy makes a new addition to its Irresistible line called the Eau De Parfum Nude Velvet.

Irresistible has consistently embodied a free, fearless, and incredibly playful woman since its inception in 2020. It is hard to resist its alluring, cheerful vibe. This newest fragrance from Givenchy is the perfect example of a happy, cohesive statement that anyone feeling feminine may confidently make: “I am irresistible!”
This tribute to sensuality, as a true skin scent, is a potent and all-encompassing suit of armour; it creates self-confidence and displays the most self-assured aspect of the irresistible woman.
It is interesting how this sensual and enveloping creation has been crafted by master perfumers Dominique Ropion, Anne Flipo, Caroline Dumur, and Fanny Bal.
The scent adds a fresh, musky dimension to the Irresistible range’s signature Rose-wood accord, creating an incredibly captivating second-skin sensation. Let us look at how this scent radiates its feminine aura.
For those of you in love with floral notes, this fragrance could take you to a whole new floral olfaction. The fragrance opens with the floral, fresh notes of Neroli essence combined with the delicious indulgence of Almond milk to bring out the inherent muskiness of Ambrette absolute. A seductive, airy Rose bouquet with Damascena Rose and Rosewater concentrate, enhanced by the refinement of a luscious Iris, is revealed in the heart notes. Deepened by Musks and Cedar essence’s woody, complex sillage, this completely enticing scent evokes the delicate feeling of a second skin.
For the perfect touch of elegance, the flowery, woodsy, and musky Eau de Parfum Nude Velvet draws a veil of captivating boldness that works on all skin types.
Besides the feminine aura, the desired bottle of Eau de Parfum Nude Velvets showcases a bare pink interior lacquer’s brilliant opacity. This seductive new style is as smooth and delicate as a passionate touch.
With its first nude pink lacquered top, imprinted with the House of Givenchy’s recognisable 4G mark, the famous prism-shaped bottle is more Couture than ever before, reaching new levels of delicacy. This bottle is feminine and exquisite, with a textured ribbon that is tone-on-tone around the neck. The fragrance’s sleek, elegant box is adorned with the same nude pink shade, accentuated with a glowing metallic trim. For an extra touch of beauty, the band and curves embrace the pink-toned package.
In the ad visual shot of Givenchy’s Irresistible by Tom Schirmacher, the British model Fran Summers reflects all of the confidence that the new scent is trying to express through feminine aspects. She expresses confidence, boldness, captivation and radiance.
What could be a better epitome of showcasing feminity? She presents a resolute appearance and demeanour while wearing the second-skin sillage of Irresistible Eau de Parfum Nude Velvet. And she wields that power beautifully.
Since every individual feeling feminine energy can have a unique scent, there are as many ways to be irresistible as there are kinds of feminine energies.
Whilst fragrances radiate masculine and feminine energies, it might be worth wondering where these energies originate from. Do they have a common source? Well, dating back to the age of Adam and Eve, both of them originated in the Garden of Eden, a place in the ancient Near East, says the Bible.
Japanese fashion designer brings alive a very similar concept by launching two new perfume editions; Eaux d’Issey with a more intense fragrance: L’Eau d’Isse Eau de Parfum Intense for her and L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Eau de Parfum for him. Its quite astonishing to know that both the male and female olfactory stories, draw inspiration from the same source; the ocean.
Issey Miyake invites us to delve into its vastness, strength, and mystery. To go on a new journey, simply follow the silvery light that shimmers on the water’s surface and head for the horizon.
Monsieur Issey Miyake granted Jacques Cavallier complete control over capturing “the aroma of water on a woman’s skin” in a bottle more than three decades ago. The Maison created one of the earliest aquatic scents for women’s perfumes with L’Eau d’Issey.
Why the sea? Well, Issey Miyake Parfums, always mindful of the natural world, envisioned these two new perfumes as a bridge connecting two worlds: the world of scents and the world of undersea exploration. Amandine Clerc-Marie and Sophie Labbé, the two perfumers, travelled under the sea with photographer and explorer Alexis Rosenfeld to get ideas.
Amandine Clerc-Marie created the aquatic floral fragrance L’Eau d’Issey Eau de Parfum Intense designed for femininity. The water served as the simple inspiration for this fragrance, an olfactory journey characterised by an intense, sensuous pace. The ocean continues to be a source of endless inspiration for the perfumer.
“The perpetual movement of the waves is hypnotic. The feeling of weightlessness is like a balm. It’s almost like being reborn. Generally speaking, my relationship with water is vital.”
-the perfumer readily confides.
This aroma begins with the harmony provided by Posidonia, or Neptune grass. This underwater plant creates expansive meadows at depths of up to 40 meters. This gentle watery meadow is nearly enchanted with its undulations and play of light and shade. It truly serves as an animal sanctuary.
Amandine was therefore inspired to create this original harmony by the warm, “plenty” qualities of underwater grass, which include floral, herbaceous, and aquatic notes, followed by the essence of Ylang-Ylang.
On the other hand, the L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Eau de Parfum is a woodsy, aquatic scent created by Sophie Labbé designed for masculinity. This scent is a bold ode to the ocean’s glistening, enigmatic waves. You can feel its oceanic intensity right away. And with good reason, the ocean’s secret depths, which are invisible from the surface and unexpected, served as inspiration for Ms Labbé.
She chooses to use notes that are strong and forceful. The tone is set at the top by the lovely electrifying essence of Sichuan Pepper. The scent of Lemon then awakens the aquatic harmony. Cedarwood and Balsam Fir give the base notes a woodsy touch that is both incredibly exquisite alongside depth and intensity.
Whilst most of the masculine perfumes carry a woodsy touch in either of their notes, would it be considerate to associate this tone always with masculinity?
Well, Narciso Rodriguez has brought to you the newest addition to the iconic ‘for her’ line; Eau De Parfum Intense which intertwines the best of woody and earthy accords with feminine energies like citrusy, vanilla, sweet, fruity and white floral.

What makes this perfume intense? The fragrance opens strongly with the top notes of Calabrian Bergamot and Peach. The scent’s hypnotic heart is created by blending an accord the Red Spider Lily with white flower blossoms that accentuate these top notes. For her signature, the heightened heart of musk intensifies and develops into a trail that combines Vanilla, warm Amber notes, Vetiver, and Moss.
This intense perfume designed for her could be one of the best examples of a mix and match of masculine and feminine energies, that captures an intense new mood.
Last but not least, here’s another example of a perfume that drew inspiration from the waters of Egypt and combines masculine-like scents such as woody, Cinnamon and balsamic fascets with feminine auras.
The Nomad Nuit D’Egypte Eau de Parfum by Chloe is the latest elixir from the house and again is a facet form the original. The perfumer Cécile Matton found inspiration in the River Nile, its cool waters, the lush vegetation along its banks, and the arid heat of the desert beyond, all illuminated by the enchanting light of Egypt.
The fragrance begins with gentle Blue Lotus top notes, which give way to a light, watery scent that exudes a light, green floral. Jasmine envelops the Lotus accord, conjuring the delightful warmth of summer evenings. The alluring, warmth of Jasmine Grandiflorum absolute, is accompanied by heliac, fruity, and animalic notes.
A seductive minerality is brought in by the fragrance’s final expression. Here, a custom blend of essential oils, including Cinnamon bark, Sandalwood, and Myrrh, complete Lumière d’Égypte’s luminous eau de parfum. Spicy and bubbly notes of pink berry and Elemi essential oil balance out the perfume’s harmony.
So far, all the feminine perfumes were said to be ‘intense’ and all the masculine ones were categorised as Eau De Parfums Extreme. What makes perfumes ‘intense’ or ‘extreme’? It’s not the higher concentration of fragrance oils used to make intense perfumes that results in a more complex scent, but the way the facets of ingredients are added to ensure scents stay longer on the skin, bringing more constituents and a more sophisticated olfactory pyramid than an Eau De Perfume. As a result, ‘intense’ or ‘extreme’ perfumes are stringer by design not amounts.
How are they created? Flavoured compounds are used by perfumers to intensify one or more aspects of the raw materials and hold the elements together lasting longer.
The male and female olfactory systems are typically regarded as distinct. The parts of our body that detect the scent, such as the nose and certain brain regions, are referred to as the olfactory system. According to functional imaging studies, women may be more activated than men in specific brain areas linked to processing odours. It is believed that olfactory sensitivity is influenced by changes in female sex hormones, particularly oestrogen.
Although there are trends based on this research, not all studies consistently demonstrate significant differences in olfactory ability, and individual differences can occur among both genders.
Hence, we could come to agree that despite the biological bodily differences between males and females, the sense of smell and preferences for one can be universal for any gender. Since the brain plays a major role in the olfactory, one’s choice of fragrance can be highly interlinked with how one feels and whichever energy they are more drawn towards.
