Radiant: Light Up My World
By Jo Phillips
Lighting design is not only simply about lighting up a room, but also aesthetics and the ambience it creates. This August, .Cent presents 3 different lighting design brands that shine and light up our worlds in different but bright ways.
1. Slamp
Milan-based brand in decorative lighting design, Slamp, prides itself for its “curiosity for new materials and experimentation, the ability to be led by instinct, and the pleasure of providing anyone with a refined, functional item of design”. For nearly 20 years, resourceful, sexy and accessible lamps are the fruits of the brand. The brand counts Zaha Hadid, Adriano Rachele and Zanini de Zanine as some of the names they have collaborated with.
CROCCO, design by Nigel Coates
Crocco by Nigel Coates, as seen above, is one of many brilliant designs by the house. Crocco, short for crocodile, is a wall mounted lamp that plays with light in a radiant unexpected way. Formed of a polished steel base and a brightly-coloured printed Lentiflex® shade, the lamp’s sinuous shape creates a striking surprise painting the canvases within a room radiantly. Depending on the size of the lamp, the LED lighting provides 1,000 to 1,500 lumen of light.

2. Design Haus Liberty
Design Haus Liberty is a design firm which combines art, materiality and space. Founded by Dara Huang, its aim is not only to shape space engaging in architectural projects, such as the Zigzag house in Boston and the Boxcar House in New Jersey, but also to define experiences and alter the way program is perceived. Innovative lighting design from the house include Origamix and Drop of Light (pictured below). The latter of which is a design inspired by the way a spider web catches droplets that turn into sparkles of light when the rain stop and the sun shines through them. “I was using several forms and tension wire – playing with different ways to manipulate the form by stringing different patterns into the frame work,” says Dara. Incorporating materials, such as stainless steel, silver wire, and either Glass Beads or Swarovski Crystal, the lamp is a contemporary sculpture of its own to be marvelled and praised.

3. Moroccan Bazaar
Spanning three generations dating back to 1946, Moroccan Bazaar is a family-run supplier and manufacturer of exquisite Moroccan interiors from accessories to lighting to tableware. Its lamp designs not only light rooms up radiantly and romantically with its refined designs and intricate details, but also offers authentic Moroccan designs that makes one dream of Arabian folktales from 1001 Nights. An example of this is the ‘Flame’ table lamp from the Fenan collection. Produced by the best Maalam (Master Craftsmen) taking up to four weeks, the lamp projects an enchanting pattern through hand chiselled floral cut outs across the walls, scattering lights of dreams and fantasies.
