Artistry Beyond Fashion: The Fusion of Art and Style
By Camille Delasalle
Do you ever think about the way you express yourself though the way you dress could be seen as art? Dressing oneself is to craft, an art form, a gentle masterpiece, where each detail serves as a stroke of creative brilliance on the canvas of the body. It’s not merely about covering up, dressing for the weather, or the occasion; it’s about storytelling through style, a symphony of colours, fabrics, and silhouettes. In this magical realm of fashion, the human form becomes a living sculpture draped in the fabric of creativity. Fashion becomes a walking artwork. Walk across various cities in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Chengdu, Shenzhen and Shenyang) and be delighted by a giant pair of light blue legs with a handbag atop.
Amidst this dynamic backdrop of city streets, Lanvin unveiled its latest artistic endeavour in collaboration with acclaimed artist Erwin Wurm. This cross-disciplinary project, part of the esteemed Lanvin Lab (a contemporary concept offering innovative and experimental fashion pieces) is an initiative that seamlessly merges the worlds of fashion and art, offering a unique perspective on contemporary cultural expression.
At the heart of this collaboration lies a monumental sculptural work titled “Desire.” This awe-inspiring piece, commissioned by Lanvin, will traverse various public spaces in China, offering viewers a glimpse into the collective longing for symbols of self-expression.
Drawing inspiration from iconic Lanvin pieces such as the Pencil Cat Bag (a playful yet elegant design featuring a hand-drawn cat silhouette) and and the Cash sneaker (Lanvin’s modern take on classic footwear, blending style with comfort for everyday wear). Wurm’s sculpture serves as a visual embodiment of the cross-cultural dialogues fostered by Lanvin Lab.
The collaboration between Lanvin and Erwin Wurm is a testament to the brand’s commitment to exploring new realms of creativity. Wurm’s distinctive artistic style, characterised by the anthropomorphising of everyday objects, resonates deeply with Lanvin’s aesthetic sensibilities.
Through this project, Lanvin continues to push the boundaries of fashion and art, blurring the lines between the two disciplines. By bringing together diverse creative voices, the brand seeks to inspire dialogue and innovation in the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary culture.

Taking the idea of creative connections further how can a simple piece of furniture be transformed into a work of art by a fashion designer?
The collaboration between Schiaparelli’s creative director Daniel Roseberry and artist F Taylor Colantonio has resulted in a striking collection of sculptural bronze and silk furniture, blurring the lines between art and design.
Inspired by the neoclassical theme of the Toilet of Venus, (a painting by Spanish artist Diego Velázquez,) the collection includes a daybed and chairs integrated with lamps, each piece meticulously crafted from raw bronze and adorned with silk embroidery.
Named after excerpts from Shakespearean and Keatsian poetry, these pieces encapsulate a surreal yet functional aesthetic, embodying the spirit of Schiaparelli’s legacy of merging art, design, and haute couture. Through this collaboration, Roseberry and Colantonio pay homage to founder Elsa Schiaparelli’s affinity for artists, further immortalizing the brand’s whimsical yet sophisticated imprint on the world of fashion and design.
