Get the Retro

By Jo Phillips

There are plenty of different styles to incorporate into your look. Indeed, you’ll probably have a different style for each type of occasion. And why not? Fashion and clothing should be fun. One increasingly popular style is the retro fashion look. These throwback styles incorporate elements of clothing and trends from decades ago, adding a touch of history to the modern style. You’ll have seen them on the streets, most likely. Wondering how to get the look yourself? Check out our useful tips below.

What Age Do You Admire?

The fun thing about going retro is that you have a wealth of options to choose from. After all, we’re talking about something like more than one hundred years of fashions you can add to your style. Of course, your look will vary greatly, depending on which age you decide to draw from. So take a look back through history, and see which style you like. You can go all the way back to classy and traditional 1920s, if you want, or how about getting the hippy look of the 1960s? Not that you necessarily need to look back that far. It’s highly popular these days to throwback to the 1990s and 1980s. To decide which one you should select, it’s best to think about which age you admire. They’ll likely be one that you’re automatically drawn to.

Touches of Retro, Not a Tsunami

Of course, if you’re going to get the retro look, then it’s important that you do things correctly. The trick is to simply use elements of old clothing, rather than going overboard. If you take a look at photos from the period that you’re trying to emulate, then you’ll find that they weren’t going to extremes. They were mostly making subtle but impactful gestures with their clothing. So when it comes to your retro look, remember that it doesn’t have to be a tsunami of old-school clothing. One or two retro pieces will do the trick if they’re worn correctly.

Invest In Quality

As with all outfits, it’ll be in your best interest to invest in quality. There’s a lot of retro clothing to choose from, but that doesn’t mean that they’re all good. If you’re going to make a splash with your look, then it’s important that you’re buying the best that’s around. For your clothes, it’s a good idea to check any good vintage markets in your area. For your footwear, you can look at old-school options that are still in production. Adidas ZX have been iconic since they were first released in 1989 and will provide a solid foundation for anyone looking to adapt the late 1980s and 1990s look. See more adidas ZX in SVD, and find a pair that you like. You’ll find that investing in quality can help to take your look to the next level.

Blending the Old With the New

As we mentioned earlier, you don’t have to make your outfit entirely retro. One good way to make your look a little bit more lively and also just begin your journey towards a more retro look is to mix the old with the new. This involves taking a couple of retro items and a couple of more modern items, and putting them together. This is especially recommended for those people who are a little style-shy. That is, the ones who don’t have as much confidence that they can pull off a bold look. You’ll find that starting small is a great way to build up your sense of style.

Look at Accessories

You don’t just have to rely on items of clothing, either. You can also buy accessories — they’ll help to make your look stand out (for example, hooped earrings if you’re going to the 1980s street look).

Have Fun With It

Finally, remember the number one rule when it comes to retro fashion: have fun with it! There are plenty of serious sides of life, but what you wear shouldn’t be one of them. People dig out retro clothing and styles because it makes life that little bit more interesting and colourful. So look at getting playful!

The good thing about retro looks is that they’ll always be around. People always look back to the past and take the parts of the culture they like. In twenty years, you’ll see people wearing clothes that we all wear today. Indeed, you might want to hold on to your current items: they might just look awesome or be worth money in the future!
