From now until the beginning of June, a carefully choreographed sequence of light, sound and movement at the Barbican Centre’s Curve Gallery will be free for visitors to experience: welcome to ‘Momentum.’

Created by London based art practice, United Visual Artists (UVA), Momentum invites visitors to be completely guided by their sharpened senses as they journey through the Curve’s vast arc, encountering twelve pendulums that each activate light and sound as they swing.

Each pendulum has been meticulously designed and built using steel, aluminium, and custom electronics. The sound is individual to each pendulum, prepared and tuned to seamlessly resonate as they move within the Curve.

Aiming to confound expectations and alter your perceptions of space, the rhythmic wave-like sway of the work is inspired by scientific instruments such as Foucault’s pendulum; the result of UVA’s enquiry into the physical laws of motion, coupled with their experimentation with light, and how this impacts space.

Watch how the sounds of your journey resounds and rolls from the pendulums as they swing and move, endlessly shifting the experience of the Curve. Build some momentum, get to the Barbican.
