Solid; On the road with Chanel

By Jo Phillips

Bright lights, winding highways and heavy sunsets; Chanel’s new cosmetics collection translates all the components of a breezy Californian road trip into makeup. The brand’s Global Creative Makeup and Colour Designer, Lucia Pica, had the genius idea of exploring the speckled shoreline and neon lights of Downtown LA in search of some fresh inspiration.

“I’m so passionate about each colour. I care so much and I think it’s important that the vibrancy comes through.”

The Italian makeup guru who crafted her first collection for Chanel last August, is known to go to new levels to conjure adventurous shades and textures.  She takes the deep blues and satiny greens of the dusk-lit Pacific Ocean, and transforms them into richly pigmented powders. She sweeps the vibrant pinks of neon road signs across eyelids to create a peachy glow. Her signature, multi-layered looks can be re-created with the help of Les 4 Ombres and Ombre Premiere; dark powders dusted over light cream bases to create defined looks with a hint of shimmer.

Pica uses different times of the day as her stimulus, turning the blazing orange sunset from evenings on the highway into a shade from her Rouge Allure lipstick range, and the taupe grey sky of an LA dawn into a nail polish named Le Vernis New Dawn.

“I am always trying to find the opposition – I think it’s something that is very Chanel.”

Lucia Pica’s fall collection combines darkness and intensity with vibrant bursts of colour.   With all ranges available in store and online, it’s time to bring the American dream to your makeup drawer!
