Suited But Not Booted, The New Way To Wear The Suit

By Jo Phillips

The biggest trend this winter is The Trouser Suit. Don’t think of it as office wear, it can be ‘play wear’ in fact it can be ‘any wear’ that you wish to express yourself. It didn’t actually become socially acceptable for women to wear trouser suits until Le Smoking by Yves Saint Laurent in 1966. Even though women wore trousers from the time of the First World War, (when it was worn by women for purely practical reasons) it was not considered ‘ladylike’ until the designer took inspiration from a black tie tuxedo and dressed a woman in one. In the 1980s big shoulder-padded suits became the byword for ‘power’. But now the suit comes back this time softer more rounded more louche if you like. Pair it with trainers or high heels wear a jacket like a dress or nip it in at the waist, and put soft lines with sharp shapes to bring balance. Most of all wear it for the day or evening and have fun with it breaking the rules. Where hard lines with soft flourishes are worn with attitude.
