Dr Booted

By Adlin Pinto

Dr. Martens’ boots tend to appeal to people who have their own individual style but share a united spirit, authentic characters who stand for something. People who possess a proud sense of self-expression and these iconic pieces of footwear are the original rock and roll boot. The first pair of Dr. Martens boots rolled off the production line on the 1st April 1960. With its trademark yellow stitch, grooved sole, and heel-loop, it was a boot for workers, initially worn by postmen and policemen comfortable, durable and lightweight in comparison to its competitors at the time. Throughout Dr. Martens’s history, the brand has been adopted and even subverted by diverse individuals, musicians, youth cultures, and tribes. The simple silhouette allows people to customise each pair; whilst on a utilitarian level, their famous durability and comfort make them ideal footwear for the world of gigs and street fashion.

Dr. Martens’ 60th anniversary this year was about championing self-expression and redefining what it means to be tough. The brand has done 12 boots with 12 different collaborators. The 12th version of 1460 boot is perhaps the toughest of boots.

For the final collaboration, Dr. Martens have partnered back up with the Japanese cult streetwear brand Mastermind World Founded by Masaaki Homma in 1997, Mastermind Japan earned their cult status via their predilection for secrecy and their prominence within the Ura-Harajuku scene (Ura-Harajuku is an area that is filled with rows and rows of unique shops such as stylish vintage clothing shops and stores selling “kawaii” (cute) sweets). Much about the Japanese label is shrouded in mystery, but Homma’s love of punk is not. The Sex Pistols long-time DM’s wearers and collaborators were key to igniting his love of this British subculture.

This sleek 1460 boot is splashed with Mastermind world’s signature skull and crossbones motifs. In a high silhouette, the collaboration is filled with a punk-inspired jungle zip, nickel trims and dual-branded zip pulls, finished with an easy-access side zip, dual-branded dog tag, black and yellow heel loop and yellow welt stitching.

To me, the skull symbolises a fight until death to fulfil one’s destiny“- Masaaki Homma, Mastermind world

The collection will drop on 12.12.20 and will be available at Dr Martens.
